I think the issue had more to do with the bride wearing black, not her guests. Wedding guests wear black all the time, and no one ever gives a fig (IME). Black clothing is considered a stylish choice for guests, but a bizarre one for the bride.
If I preferred it, I’d wear black to my wedding; the guests wouldn’t consider the color inauspicious, so much as ‘fug’.
