Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
I think schools have stopped teaching it for quite some time now. Something about letting children express their individuality.

Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
joint writing is not easy to read for most people therefore schools in the US discourage it.
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
Cursive is not the same as 'joint up'.
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
we did a crazy amount of practice in cursive. and i still suck at it. :(
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
I know cursive is not joint writing. But it is step towards recursive writing.
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
I wasn’t replying to your post. I was mentioning it for the people who think cursive is taught in UK schools.
This is cursive: Cursive - Wikipedia
My dad who learnt english in Pak writes cursive (you can especially tell by the 'r’s) My mum who went to school in the UK in the late 60’s learnt cursive. I went to primary school throughout the 80’s and we had handwriting lessons which were italics and ‘joined-up’ but they weren’t teaching proper cursive script. Even that has been toned down a lot now.
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
I thought cursive was another name for italics. ![]()
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
We learnt the lower case letters like that link, but not the uppercase so maybe it wasn’t cursive that we were learning then.
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
same uzzy!
Obviously it wasnt proper cursive i learnt then!
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
I thought cursive was joint:bummer:
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
dont consider yourself
. cursive also considered as joint writing as you can see wikipedia confirms it.
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
just wait for 20 more years, they will not even teach writing. only typing or speech-to-text will rule :)
I am not sure if that is going to happen, and if that does, it would be pretty dangerous. History of civilizations survived only through writings. Be it clay tablets, cave walls, engravings, paper prints or what not. Digital forms (typing and speech-to-txt) are convenient but not survivable.
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
That is why Americans did not deserve to be granted freedom from British Empire , they have ruined the language. No ?
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
I think you'll find it's heading that way already. As soon as kids start high school, most assignments are done on the computer, even regular homework. Many don't have the skill to write well and quickly so they struggle in exams.
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
Wikipedia also says this:
“After the 1960s, it was argued that the teaching of cursive writing was more difficult than it needed to be. Forms of simply slanted characters, termed italic, were considered by some to be easier and traditional cursive unnecessary. Because of this, a number of various new forms of cursive appeared in the late 20th century, including D’Nealian and Getty-Dubay; these models lacked the craftsmanship of earlier styles such as Spencerian Script, Zaner-Bloser, and the Palmer Method, but were less demanding. With the range of options available, handwriting became nonstandardized across different school systems in different English-speaking countries.”

thanks for the info:hat:
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
"In the United States of America, the name of "cursive" is most commonly used to describe this style of writing. In the United Kingdom and in Ireland, the phrase "joined-up writing", "real writing" or "joint writing" is far more commonly used, while the term "running writing" or just "cursive" is most commonly used in Australia."
Re: Why don't they teach cursive handwriting in
gosh, why don't you try to understand that whether you call it cursive or joined-up, that kind of completely connecting script, with the letters like in that first picture (notably the 'a' 'r' and 'z'), is not taught any more in the UK.
you can get milly in here and ask her what they teach now.
Re: Why don’t they teach cursive handwriting in
I teach cursive/joined up handwriting and I hate it!
It’s a bicth. I have 17 boys and 5 of them can barely form all of their letters correctly never mind join them up!
‘Lead in’…‘2 o’clock letters’…argh!
However, my kids have really nice handwriting now, they all went through this stupid stage of trying to join every single bleeding letter in every single word and I had to force them to stop!
It is not possible it join up every single letter in every single word, looks daft and very hard to read, especially when written by 5 year olds!
I use these to help them (and me) Ground, Grass and Sky Alphabet Strips – Cursive (SB749) - SparkleBox
The r is the trickiest letter.
To be honest most of them barely understand ascenders and descnders let alone 2 o’clock letters.
In all the schools I have worked in (North and South England) my current school is the only one that LOVES cursive handwriting. No other school I have taught in has given it too much importance. Although I have only taught ages 4-7. The higher years might give it more importance.
