as far as i know all a man has to do is give out equal amounts of assets to the spouses but where does it say anything about the fact that a woman has to be handicapped or in need and that’s the only way that a man can have a second wife.

yes for most of the part its a myth. A woman does not have be in any specific need to become someone’s second wife. Second wife comes under same conditions as first wife. Do you marry first wife only if she is poor, widow, handicap or orphan, no - right? Same is with 2nd or 3rd wife.
