Re: Why doesn’t India give up on Kashmir?
Mostar, that is the current issue - a growing economic middle class with income and time to spare, and no growth in social fragmentation aspect. This is stark mostly in the north - hindi speakers seem to not realize india is more than just their language, religion and culture. in fact, the prosperity in $$$ is funneled towards spreading regressive ideologies that had faded somewhat since independence. BJP/RSS has spread the idea that going to hindu religious roots is the same thing as being prosperous as a country. Quite similar to the obsession with implementing islam in muslim countries’ civil societies, this pretty much means the end of tolerance of diverse views, women’s rights, respect for science etc.
and kashmir is pretty much trapped. the valley is more prosperous than other indian states with similar economic output - indian gov has pumped in money for decades to appease the bigwigs in the valley. some of them realized they could get money from pakistan as well on the side. “separatist” leaders like geelani go to london for medical treatment on indian taxpayers’ money, preach violent separatism to the poor kashmiri youth, and sends his own kids to safe schools in india and abroad. also, pro-indian sentiments werent all that unusual in the valley with the educated and employed. they had what seemed like a clear path to a solid life. BJP has shut this pipeline off, and are openly bullying them.
sachaydino, india breaking up will be more bad news for its neighbors. pakistan will end up with one or more neighbors who will be worse than india as a neighbor. it would be good for south india though, right now south indian income generation is bankrolling the low productivity farmers and their loans of bihar and UP - literally people in UP are getting 400 Rs for 100 Rs they pay in in govt schemes, while the south is fleeced. i’m sure you’ve seen this pattern elsewhere too…
Very much right - we hardly see any communal rights in the South.
I heard Muslim league is coalition partner in Kerala Government.
These are the North Indian and Central Indians who have been fighting and killing each other over the last centuries -who can forget the slaughter of 1947 in North India.
I do not know what Kashmiries will get by joining Pakistan- considering the pathetic condition of Pakistan. I guess if Kashmir is freed it will look like more or less Afghanistan as some of the extremist Islamic factions there have already declared to impose sharia and not to accept the Pakistani rule.
