Why does Saudi Arabia bar American kids from returning to US?

Anyone knows why Saudi Arabia bar kids from travelling back to US?
Are there other cases like the one described below?

Bush says Saudi Arabia needs to resolve disputes over custody of American citizens

CRAWFORD, Texas -

Conservatives have been pressing Bush to more forcefully pursue humanitarian issues with Saudi Arabia, particularly citizenship cases in which American children are kidnapped or detained, often by their Saudi fathers, and are prevented from leaving.

“The president cited … the crying humanitarian concerns, the issues involving justice and the rights of people to come back to the United States if that’s their desire,” Fleischer said.

Bush referred to the case of Amjad Radwan, 19, born in Houston to an American mother and Saudi father. Radwan is prohibited from leaving Saudi Arabia.

Her story was the subject of a congressional hearing this summer, and Republicans in Congress have written several letters to Bush urging him to help.

Radwan’s mother, Monica Stowers, had taken the child and her older brother to Saudi Arabia in 1985, only to learn that her husband already was married with a family.

Stowers attempted to retrieve the children when she left, but her husband refused to let them go and a Saudi court awarded him custody. Courts there almost always favor Saudi fathers in child custody cases involving non-Saudi mothers, according to State Department officials.

In 1990, Stowers snatched the children and fled to the American Embassy, which refused to help. Stowers ultimately was arrested and imprisoned. Eventually, Radwan escaped to live with her mother and brother in Saudi Arabia, but she is not allowed to leave.

Fleischer said Bush asked the Saudi ambassador to help resolve the problems so Radwan can return to the United States. He also urged resolution of other similar cases. The ambassador said he would relay the message back to Saudi Arabia.

Somehow, I think it is wrong to view this within the context of it being a Saudi issue. It is a parental rights issue that exists in all countries and gets dicey when it involves two different countries.

In America, a husband and wife living in Podunk, Iowa gets divorced and the wife usually becomes the custodial parent. It may interest you to know that the wife is NOT free to just pack up and move with the kid to Los Angeles, California. The husband has visitation rights and he can ask a court to prevent his wife from moving because he will lose his right to visit the child in accordance with the divorce decree. For sure, the wife would be forbidden to move to another country with the kid and might even lose physical custody to the husband if that became a real danger.

In another thread, someone posted about a Saudi woman living in America whose American husband was gay so they got divorced. The husband was given custody and there was some real disputes about her and/or the kid going to Saudi Arabia.

In this story, the couple apparently resided for some time in SA and the Saudi father got custody of the kid. To me, it is easy to understand why the ex-wife will not be allowed to take the kid to America. Even for a visit. Simply put, they might not come back. Undoubtedly, the American wife would try to get an American court to give her custody and then the dad is scr#wed.

what you write makes eminent sense. I just don't have enough background to say one way or the other. Does anyone know what are the laws in SA regarding this? For example, someone told me just yesterday that in SA in custody cases Fathers get the kids and not moms as in USA. I don't know if that is true. If anyone knows more about the laws and enviroment that governs such issues in SA, it would be nice to hear from them.
