Need to play 7 batsmen with such an awesome batting lineup.

Shewag
Tendulkar
Ganguly
Dravid
Laxman
Yuvraj.

Any other team would be more than happy to play 5 bowlers with such a batting lineup. Yet Indians don’t feel comfortable with this lineup. Why? Also consider that out of the 5 bowlers Pathan is rapidly becoming an established all rounder. At least he can stay at the wicket and provide support to the established batsmen.

Please dont use today as an example, the performance of the whole team was not upto standard and also the Paksitanis played very well today. Normally such a line up should produce goods. Than why this need for a 7th batsmen?

the common perception in india and maybe most other countries is bnatsmen win you games, not bowlers hence they prefer playing with 7 batsmen.

You never know, they might even start playing with 11 batsmen!!

I think it's because Indian bowling isn't improved that much by adding a 5th bowler as the candidates for such a job are pretty ordinairy. Assuming Zaheer is fit it might make sense as I feel that Nehra, Zaheer, Pathan and Balaji would provide a useful seam attack. Agarkar is a waste of space and Pathan is a better bat than him.

^ Yes injuries aside I would play Zaheer as part of 5 bowlers and if still one of the bowlers is having an off day they have good part time bowlers in Tendulkar, Shewag, Yuvraj and Gangs.

I just feel that they dont have enough confidence in their batting line up, which is a surprise as it is one of the best in the world even without resorting to a 7th batsmen.

Simple, all their match winners are batsmen.

I can understand the need for an specialist 5th bowler in test matches but not in one-day matches. The format of one-day matches is biased in favor of the batsman.

Also, a team should play to its strength. Indian side does not have 5 aggressive bowlers....plus the line between mediocre or friendly bowlers(e.g. Agarkar) AND part-time bowlers like Tendulkar is pretty blurred in one day matches...it makes a lot of sense to include an extra batsman unless you have a real good 5 th bowler.

they r going to play 7 batsmen against SL and i can see balaji sitting on the bench....
with their A side touring, wonder who they will pick as a replacement for laxman....

i say why bother bringing another player from india when u know its just the last match that u will play in this tournament.... :p

Plus you have to see the past records. India’s many famous victory in recent times was achieved due to 6th and7th batsmen.
