why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

I swear every fruit that I buy from the grocery store taste the same. I don’t think pears are suppose to taste like apples. Bananas are huge but tasteless!

There is no taste in the vegetables either. (the smell is there but not the taste)

Please don’t send me to Whole foods - because the fruit tastes the same and we are in a recession.

Where do you guys buy your vegetables and fruit that don’t taste cardboard.

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

i buy min efrom the korean deli. good stuff.

^ we go to a korean market too :lifey: prices are often a bit more reasonable as well.

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

ok googleing Korean markets in NJ

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

Because every fruit and vegetable you buy from regular markets is loaded with heavily engineered chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides etc. Not saying produce back home isn't, but the magnitude here is insane.

Google organic.

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

Same here! i have tried every supermarket in the area and it all tastes like cold storage fruit/vegetables, they are fresh looking but certainly don't taste like it.

I googled some info, it is estimated that the average American meal travels about 1500 miles to get from farm to plate. In order to transport food long distances, much of it is picked while still unripe and then gassed to "ripen" it after transport, or it is highly processed in factories using preservatives, irradiation, and other means to keep it stable for transport and sale. Scientists are experimenting with genetic modification to produce longer-lasting, less perishable produce.

Taste has unfortunately taken a backseat, compared to elevating shelf life. when i was in illinois (in a hick town), when it was peak corn season, i tasted the BEST corn ever, because we got to buy it fresh from the farms (literally!) same for peaches, the juiciest peaches i have ever tasted, right off the farm, but then these products i noticed had a limited shelf life, would go bad very quickly. It wasn't loaded with pesticide or herbicide to keep it going longer and probably why it retained the flavour.

Looking for farmers markets on the east coast now...!

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

Go to a produce market...here we have farmers market in the spring and summer....freah fruits and veggies from the farm, organic and pure. But other times, I usually buy from a produce market such as the chinese/korean ones mentioned above.

Yup, thats the exact reason. One shouldnt be surprised.

I havent tasted organic fruits but do they taste better?

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

some taste better..like bananas and grapes and strawberries and peaches and cucumbers especially.

Re: why does fruit/vegetables in US taste like crap!

We buy our weekly fruit and vegetables from this awesome Kosher store owned by Israelis.... all the stuff they have is just so fresh and nice... beautiful on the outside, equally delicious on the inside... and for here and there everyday things that we're running low on, usually the corner chinese markets are ok...
