When we compare Cricket to Football there is a contrast in fan base.
Why is that in Football people will wear the same shirts as the team their supporting, wave flags, sing songs together and carry other items representing their country. It’s like a carinival experience, whereas in cricket people sit back and dont take much enthusiasm except clapping.
This bears the same for the young and old supporters.
Sure there is Football hooligans, but that is a small minority.
The World Cup is starting in 2 days and the whole world is totally pumped. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Pakistan play against India, with a sea of GREEN only.
I would hope Cricket fans learn a thing or two from the Football fans and bring the carnival experience to this lovely game as well.
Re: Why does Cricket not have enough passionate supporters?
Yeah you are right, it is so one main reason is that cricket is a slow game, another the decision rests on a day match or on a five day match as the case may be however in soccer the result is in one and half hour.
You can cheer up in a small time to your heart content but cannot go on cheering for the full day. Football supporters are not holligans the ones that are holligans cannot be football supporters.
Football is lively in cricket the spectators do have a nap in the stadium as well.

wow ... the very first post and you've been a member since December 2004 :D .. welcome to GS!
Re: Why does Cricket not have enough passionate supporters?
cricket does not have enough passionate supporters?don't agree with that..cricket is like religion in india and india is the second largest country in the world... add to that fans from pakistan, bengladesh and srilanka and you got a fan base which is probably only second to soccer in terms of numbers.
Re: Why does Cricket not have enough passionate supporters?
Read the first post again. It is more about the lively atmosphere and we can say ORGANIZED enthusiasm. Where the crowd seems to be from a totally different league. You know, with hundreds and hundreds of fans clad in the official team jersey cheering their side. Our spectators are not that vibrant and colorful.
Thats why I would agree with post #3 here because "aashilal" had put it very well in his first post ever since his registration back in our younger days
Re: Why does Cricket not have enough passionate supporters?
It is more to do with affordability as well. Majority of our crowd can hardly afford the ticket to enter the stadia and these colors mean extra cost :)
Re: Why does Cricket not have enough passionate supporters?
I think Cricket does have a huge fan base after Soccer. Only problem with Cricket is that it's not played in many parts of the world and is still very unknown in North and South America.
Also, I don't agree that Cricket doesn't have as cheery fans as Soccer. I went to the desi theater for Pak Vs. India game in 2004 and 2005 and boy the theater was packed. From the parking lot to the lobby, and the 3 halls showing the game, they were jam packed. As far as enthusiasm was concerned, people were into the game literally. I mean I even saw a girl praying silently for Pak victory in Peshawar in 2004 and people had all kinds of flash lights esp of green color. So the fan cheering part, I'm not sure that's really true.
As someone said that 20/20 Cricket will bring more name and more countries since it doesn't take that much time as compared to a 50 overs game or even a test match. But, Cricket is increasing in fame and the other day, I gave a speech on Cricket in my Speech and Communication class and man, people were really into it.

Also, I don't agree that Cricket doesn't have as cheery fans as Soccer. I went to the desi theater for Pak Vs. India game in 2004 and 2005 and boy the theater was packed. The theater is called Funasia in Richardson, TX. We had lots of fun and no fighting at all. We did a lot of hooting and chanting but that's why we went there to build up the electrifying atmosphere as Ramiz Raja puts it.
