On topic: It is not good that some men and their families make men marry a doctor and don't really let the wife peruse the career.
On the other hand female doctors after marriage do let go of their career as if being a doctor was enough for getting a good rishta.
Both ways it is waste of talent, resources and money.

This is what I heard when I went and visited family in Pak. They were going CRAZY that I had said that I would prefer not to marry a physician and their response was “but then your husband wont understand your schedule”
I had a rishta from a phD and people I knew were straight up calling him “master sahib”. It didn’t work out, but shows you people’s mentalities.
I’m going to med school and so far any rishta from a laalchi aunty I’v gotten has resulted in failure because they can’t make up their mind. They approach us because they find out Im starting med school and want a “dr bahu” but when it comes down to it, they can’t hack it. they want me to stay at home instead because OMG who’ll feed their presh son and pop out babies every 9 months.
also, regarding the pakistani girls going to med schools in pak to beef up resumes: though there might be girls like that, my own experience with cousins and stuff was different. some of them and their classmates were at the top of their class in biology and were going to med school, but societal pressure got the best of them and they had to get married. Unfortunately, for most middle class pakistanis the mentality of “in-laws come first” results in the girls getting preggo immediately or them giving in to quit school so they can focus on making their home.

what a sexist statement to make.......
girls should be allowed to study whatever they want...........and its upto their own free will what they want to do afterwards............its this same mentality that is keeping our desi women from achieving their maximum potential.
It's being realistic not sexist. We are talking about a country where only 28 doctors are available for 10,000 people. This % is far much lower in rural areas. Unfortunately or fortunately most of the pakistani population still lives in villages where living conditions are not that great. How many people will let their daughters, sisters or wives to go live in a place where you have to go to a farm to relieve yourself at night? When you know you won't be practicing then whey waste a seat? Medicine is not like doing a B.A or M.B.A where unlimited seats are available. It's a basic ROI concept that we as a country still have limited resources and these resources should be invested properly.
Instead of talking women rights we should try to do what is realistically possible. There is much higher chance of a guy practicing medicine then a girl in country like pakistan.

My sister is finishing up her doctorate degree and her husband is finishing his residency in cardiology. They have crazy hectic schedules but they are both very dedicated and understand each other so they are making it work.

it is them who WANT a dr.bahu/dammad.
and being a doc sounds cool,so the MILs can boast about their Daughter IL/Son IL.
as far as the docs themselves are concerned..they end up marrying anyone they like to/want to!be it their classfellows/colleagues/friends/family friends/anyone mum points out.
thats the best thing about being a doc i guess:D
docs deserve marrying anyone they want after studying so much/worked up.
on a serious note..
almost all my female classmates(gov-institute) are married ladies now.majority dont practice,many being married to docs abroad.so the thing about girls more interested/their parents more interested in making them take that profession for a good rishta is some what very true.
and the fact that the ones who get married to docs abroad..its a long and hectic road to getting into practice again/passing exams/getting admissions again.they'd rather be stay at home mums.some of their husbands are encouraging enough to push them into the field again,but that is quiet rare a successful story.time passes..kids come in,and its a differnt story then.
