Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

So…I was just thinking the other day…why is it that some people watch movies and expect them to be real!!! Or expect the movies to stick to reality?

When I go for a movie…specially for some Bollywood stuff…I do NOT expect them to stick to reality! Then it is really not an entertainment flick or a masala flick…

I hate watching Bollywood or superhero movies with my husband…he drives me up the wall..coz he will start looking for logic in them!!! Seriously?! It is a movie…if you want logic or if you want it to be “real”, go watch a documentary!!! (and I hate watching kung-fu movies with him as well!! )

When I watch a movie I want to laugh, or come out and feel like..woahhhhhhh..that just kicked butt! or go “awwwwwwww”…I avoid watching documentaries coz, life is real enough…why would I want to watch someone else’s pain…also some documentaries make me so angry…

The ONLY time I like watch movies based on real life events are HORROR  Coz then I come out of the cinema having goosebumps and am like, “Oooohhhh…that was real!!! Man there are some crazy ppl in this world!”.

So tell meeeee…aap log kya soch ke movies dekhne jaathe hooooo?

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

to learn

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

^to learn?

do you expect main stream cinema to stick with reality?

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

some of it yes!

btw what is reality, its just a perception. Whatever you believe in is real to you.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

^Very true...like I believe Bruce Lee was like super human and that he could have done almost anything :D

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be “real”?

A little confession here. I watch fight scenes from any of the Bourne films almost everyday to study them and think about pulling them off when I get into trouble. So sometimes I watch movies to learn from them (not to beat people up but just protect myself from drunks) and sometimes I just watch movies for fun. Although I can’t watch the one’s which have no logic at all as in most Bollywood movies e.g. Dabaang.

yup, sometimes you get to learn some neat tricks…I remember when I was really small..I watched one movie where they showed this girl who had her hands tied behind her and how she managed to get her hands in front of her…I thought that was cool…

Not to reality, just to logic.

Growing beard and wearing dark shades do not change your face and you cant expect to sing and dance in villain’s party, undetected.

it is a MOVIE :snooty:

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be “real”?

There is a limit to which they can abuse the logic but when they cross it the film becomes unwatchable.

Good thing is that nowadays, high budget sci-fi Hollywood movies really pay attention to the logic and real science. That is why I enjoy watching them a lot.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

Fast and Furious 6??

Is that a sci-fi? I haven’t watched the movie.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

Action Adventure. Look for Pacific Rim, The wolverine, GI Joe Retaliation. There are still a lot of movies that don't pay much attention to science.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

this is a great debate amongst lots of cinephiles because reality in itself can never be re-created in cinema. Real-ISM can exist but you can't expect reality within Cinema because the minute you turn on the camera and have people act in front of it you end reality and go in a created world. So reality in the literal sense of the word can never exist in the world of movies. Thats why so many movies create their own worlds and spend the first couple of scenes in getting the audience to believe in that world. Some Bollywood movies however continue on creating the world through out the movie thereby never allowing for us to settle on one thing. We can expect a bullet to easily kill a person and in the same movie see someone dodge it like nothing at all.

Coming back to realism, that can be conveyed through situations. A situation(plot and/or story) within a movie must be real for the audience to connect with and respond to appropriately and then experience the emotional journey of the characters in that situation.

but it really depends on what you as an audience member are looking for in the movie. Do you want it to be representative of life and the human nature to derive from it something meaningful so that your time doesn't seem wasted or like so many Indian movie watchers say-do you want it to be a 'timepass' movie!

In my opinion no movie should let go of or undermine the human intelligence that just seems rude to me.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be “real”?

^ I like your argument! Very well explained and it makes sense.

When I go to watch an Indian movie..I never expect any kind of reality or logic…same thing when I go to watch any super-hero movie or action adventure…I just go there to sit, relax and enjoy..in other words..I want to forget the real world…I want my hero to survive, dodge a hundred bullets coming his way…while he manages to get all the bad guys with only a few scratches…yup that is just how silly I am

So for this reason…I love going to the movies on my own..or I go with someone who I can just say “Shut-up!”, if they start analyzing the movie :cb:

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

Oh believe me I sometimes watch movies for the sake of being entertained without caring for the plot-holes and over-acting.

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be “real”?

^:cb:

The only time I get irritated with a movie is when I watch a horror or a supernatural flick and it ends in such a stupid way…like they don’t explain as to why something has happened…that just leaves you hanging :pcg:

For horror and supernatural…I most of the time like to stick with East Asian stuff…they are normally pretty good…

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

Who was it that complained about Dabang. Chukbul Pandey got ur number.

Serious movies are good too. So are documentaries. Michael Moore's films are awesome. F

Re: Why do you watch movies and expect them to be "real"?

Realism is something which is a trait of some movies........not all. Fantasy and science fiction cant be realistic....... thing is .......people who like movies with realism are forced to watch those fantasy movies....and end up getting annoyed.....

case in point......stop forcing your guy to watch stupid bollywood movies :p
