that people who seemingly have everything to live for, still feel like there’s something missing in their lives?
what got me thinking is this current celebrity death of Heath Ledger…here you have a man who has a little girl, millions of adoring fans, critical and commercial success, and a career that is only going up
it turns out he has a history of substance abuse…and however he died it probably had something to do with overdosing-whether intentional or not is still under investigation
he’s not the only celebrity who does things like this
but its not just celebrities…we just know these stories because these people are in the limelight
tons of other “regular” people have the same problems…it could be your best friend or the random stranger walking down the street
and obviously we only know what people tell us about and a lot of things are kept hidden…but think of yourself…how many of you (and i’m not asking you to announce this, just think about it) think you should be happy with the life you have and you seem to have everything you could ever want and yet you’re still unhappy
why do you think we’ve come to such a point? and why is it that this seems to be a current thing and not something you really read about too much centuries prior…i mean obviously suicide was around then too, but you don’t hear about it as much
is it the same as it always was and we just hear about things more in our globally connected world now, or has it intensified in recent years
i guess it comes down to, why are we so damn unhappy?
lack of qana-at,
thinking this life is everything,
and materialism and material success being used as determining factors of happiness.
ppl attribute happiness to things, if i do this I will be happy, if i do that i will be happy, if i have this I will be happy, if i have that that will be happy.
as spociety increasingly puts emphasis on materialism, thats what we use as a measure of success, and as people move up, they see more, want more.
tlk. so you don't think that those things have to do with eachother at all? what makes you content but unsatisfied in your life? (if you don't mind my asking)

Qana-at...english pweeze. Urdu is not one of my strengths and hubby ghar per nahin hai...:(
So I take it that you are not satisfied and want to improve, TLK??
Struggling for betterment I said Niksik .. we should not give up on improving ... (contd. below)

Unsatisfied does not mean that I am not happy with my family life, finances, value system or health ... but I know they are not perfect ... they can never be .. no one can claim that .. but we can always move towards perfection
5abi, this is true...but there are plenty of people who don't have money who are also unhappy
x2, we can say that if we have a religious point of view, but there are plenty that don't believe in any other life...or there are those that put nothing into this life and can't wait to leave it...there are also people who believe in a hereafter and not just this life that are unhappy as well
i guess it comes off the way i wrote it, but i don't mean just monetary things...although a lot of peoples worries and unhappiness do come from not having enough to satisfy their basic ideas of a decent and comfortable lifestyle...there are people from all walks of life who are depressed

Even from a non religious angle, are material possessions and material success directly proportional to happiness, study after study shows that they are not.
while in the right amount and with right mindset they dont help, but on there own they dont equate happiness.
we link our happiness to too many things. searching in the wrong places

that's true, i totally agree with you, but i think generally most of the people that don't believe in material gains are usually more religiously inclined

bingo...i think that is exactly it...
well said fraudia bhai!
i think it's so ingrained in us though at this point that we don't know how to go about it otherwise
saieen and nbn…guys! did you read the rest of the thread? the point is not heath ledger he’s just an example
(although i just read a report that he might’ve had pneumonia so his tie to this whole thread could possibly be moot…regardless, celebrities seem to be a part of society that have it “all”)
