What did Mr. Maslow say about our hierarchy of needs? The fourth step was our need for esteem that comes from both within (self-esteem) and from without (respect of others). While in an ideal world our self-esteem would be sufficient, in the real world it is not. We as humans crave/desire the respect and consideration of others. How that is manifested differs from person to person. But social constructs have made chivalry a demonstration of said respect being accorded to women.
Call it what you want, call it courtesy so that it’s not gender specific - but everyone wants to be treated well.
