I’ve noticed that most women are very catty to each other and I think the MIL-DIL conflict partly stems from this. They are very nice and polite in public but often criticize other women behind their backs. If men don’t like other men, they don’t hang out with them and you can usually tell who doesn’t like who.
A female friend of mine brought this up; she’s very tomboyish and hangs out with guys and she said that she can’t stand hanging out with other girls sometimes because of how catty they can be. So why are women so catty?
If I hate someone I avoid hanging out with them So do most other females I know. As for the women I do interact with (i.e. my friends) I’m not catty with at all. You speak as if backbiting is something women only do. I know several guys who do the same thing Hang out and spend time with each other but speak poorly of each other behind each other’s backs.
Not every girl is like that. In fact, I dont even have guy "friends" and prefer to hang with only girls. Of course some girls can be territorial and possessive but for the most part only insecure/unconfident girls would do stuff like that. If I don't like someone I'm over it once and for all b/c I just dont hang out with them.

Just general gossiping and back biting. It was mostly all the MIL threads and my friend commenting on it that made me open this thread. I've also heard this amongst white people as well; they don't have joint family systems and there is still drama between MILs and DILs. Granted not all women are like this but I would think the percentage of women who are like this are higher than men.
It's probably a competitive thing. Getting the attention of men (i.e. grab the best mate). To be fair, guys compete for women too but I think it's less subtle and more up front.
I just wanted to see if any women had experiences with this or explanations. It could be that I'm way off base...

I am far from being catty.. so if you are hinting at my cattiness, stop looking, it doesn’t exist. The only place I have this happen is on shows like Jersey Shore. I am obviously not saying catty women don’t exist but they are far less than what you are implying.
I agree, the stuff you see on TV is often set up or edited to look a certain way. I’m proud of the fact that I’m a “girl’s girl” and always have been. Plan on raising my future daughter the same way.
1.Women feel that their biological prime-time is limited. She can easily be replaced by a new younger, more beautiful woman. Youth is a woman’s fair-weathered friend.
2.Women feel that other women control their man’s sexual fidelity.
3.Women feel that their level or degree of physical beauty is based on luck as opposed to something that she controls.
4.Women feel that other women can take something that they have worked hard to earn by using their beauty on the job, school and the legal system because men will be taken by her beauty.
5.Women feel that other women can not be trusted. They gossip too much, they are phony and they would take your man right before your eyes.
6.Women feel that other women divert attention away from them.
7.Women feel psychologically competitive with other women to be more attractive.
8.Women subconsciously believe that if they merely looked like another woman, they could inherit her life, her diamond, her man, and people would look at her with the same admiration.
