Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Malhot bro! You don't have to repeat Indian government's lies. Give your own opinion if possible. Just look at the map first before shouting china china.

Military is used all over the world to keep peace in the country.

SC bro! Indians have been using 700,000 soldiers in Kashmir for a long time to control the insurgency and civil war.

Military rule however abhorrent is just the last resort to keep things going to full scale death and destruction as we have seen in many other countries around the world.

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

what happened to the other 100,000? I thought it was 800K? Or perhaps you meant 7,000,000 and missed a 0?

On the 2nd para, let me just ask you this

When Musharaf couped Sharief, do you seriously belief that was as a measure of last resort for the country or his person?

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Based on my independent analysis! Yes.

  1. Long term threat: NS was about to split the army by using 3 (almost 50%) corps commanders

  2. Short term issue: To let PIA jet with 100s of passengers land at Karachi airport.

People who are not familiar with Pakistan or Pakistani army tend to follow leftist analysis of the situation and thus end up with wrong conclusion.

If that were only the case. Successive military rule has done nothing more than erode civil institutions to the point of being useless.

We have no right to complain about militants, when the military (can’t get more militant than that) usurps power and mismanages state affairs. Such behavior only encourages a power-grab mentality. It certainly does not foster respect for the state or the institutions that define it.

Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia…all examples of states where the military only made things worse.

A split of the army would be a good idea…Iran has successfully employed this tactic and the military is more or less out of the political arena for fear of what the other faction would do. I don’t know what this does for military readiness, but I’d suggest the biggest threat facing Pakistan right now is institutional, not armed threat.

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Pics bro! It is easy to blame everything on the military.

It is like a guy drinks water from the sewer and then blames the policeman for his bellyache.

Just for a change, civil institutions must take responsibility for their downfall, instead of blaming everyone else including Martians.

Iranian regime is the prime example of "how not to run a country", and you bring examples from them? strange!

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

I'm not blaming "everything" on the military. Simply pointing out that a malfunctioning civil infrastrucutre is better than having it co-opted by a semi-functional military administration...if for no other reason than the civilians are never given a chance to improve.

Well, if the Policeman kicks the guy out of his household, and takes his place within his family he is clearly going beyond all reasonable bounds.

Having the military in charge should not be status-quo...it should be a temporary measure. These guys always leave when THEY screw up big...

The point being is that the Iranian military is a non-actor in Iranian politics...unlike in pakistan. I don't understand how I implied we run Pakistan as the Iranians run their country...

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Bro Pico, can you please elaborate on this.

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Americans cannot fight a conventional war against Pakistan either. Hellooo see who provides supplies for US coalition in Afghanistan?

Economy melts down? I don't know if you've been living under a rock, but Pakistani economy has nearly tripled since Musharraf came into power.

How is it in more problems than before? The way I remember, back in the 90's, the economy was done & the country on the brink of collapsing.

So, basically what you are saying is: Pakistan should be made a puppet state like the Arab monarchs ? Is that right? Because that is what they do - bring in foreigners and destroy any thing constructive/self-reliant.

Not we, only you!

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

The question should not be if Pakistan needs an army. The question should be: Does Pakistan need the self serving army it has right now?

Simply put, Pakistan's army is the worst thing that has happened to the country. They meddle in politics. They disrupt free enterprise. They make up imaginary battles. They fuel ethnic divide. They splurge on personal luxuries (cars, plots, servant). Pakistan's army is essentially a backyard bully with nothing better to do than push around Pakistan.

Pakistan needs an army, but the army needs to be accountable. The army we have today might have flashy toys to play with but it is nothing to be proud of.

Re: Why do we need Amry in Pakistan now …

Re: Why do we need Amry in Pakistan now ....

I wish your dreams come true, but not for PA

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

the many countries you said are not as diverse as pakistan,

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

A country like Pakistan needs an army - unfortunately the Army has become so powerful, that it now controls all facets of the Pakistan life.

This is what needs to be curtailed.

Re: Why do we need Army in Pakistan now...

Are you talking about the Pakistan Army now lead by Gen Ashfaq Kayani or the army of industrial, feudal and extremist thugs or militant lawyers lead by Nawaz, Zardari, Qazi/Fazal, Aitezaz and Iftikhar respectively...?

At worst or at best, the Pakistan Army being discussed here, self-serving at times as it may be, is luckily never as progressively liberal or legalistically democratic as the flag bearers of freedom, liberalism and deomcracy who're havng their way with everything in Pakistan; this week it was dignity, maybe next week citizens will be ripped off life, limb and prperty?

Surely the Pakistan Army and its soldiers, at least under the 'self-serving' dictator never brought things down to this democratic, progressive level.
His bad not having his way, the way it's the way of the land of the pure...
