Can anyone answer this question… why do the girls family do a barat day? I do not understand the point behind it…
I read somewhere that in Islam there is no such a day. Although many families use it as a day to give their daughter away, it should be done in a more respectable manner (according to the book) A barat comes to the girls house to take the girl to her new home (husbands house). The barat consists of both men and women; it mentioned that these men are seen as strangers who are coming parts of a large gathering to take her. In fact what the girl’s family should do is give their daughter away in more elegance. The girl is seen as a precious belonging of her parents who should ideally send the girl with an elder of the family (nani/dhaadhi etc) to the boy’s house. It shows that they are giving something special instead of her being taken if you like.
I found this interesting as many families do have two separate functions.
