what do you think is the basis of our fear of God?
for one thing we have been taught that for years and years to be especially afraid of him. he is the all knowing, omnipotent. he can do anything he wants. he will destroy you if you dont behave. and things like that.
but i think we are afraid of God because we do not have a clear idea of what he is. he is invisible, and we fear the invisible. we do not know much about how he looks like, how he behaves etc etc. keep in mind that his behaviour changes from one extreme to the other. in short he is unknown, and we fear the unknown. that is just the psychology of humans.
do you think there could be other reasons for that?
People were taught to fear God, so that they restrain themselves from making any mistakes.
People were taught that God loves its creation and helps his devotees, so that it gives confidence to a person filled with self pity.
Mind of a person easily gets impressioned or easily programmed if that person believes in God(atleast in most cases)!!!. But actually, there is no God. You are God!!!

No we are afraid of Allah (swt) because we love him and respect him and we know cause he gave us so many Naimaa't, we dont want to do anything to disrespect or disobey him so we wont make him angry

I have many, many emotions toward God. Fear is not among them.
Now, fear for myself if I don't live up to God's standards? Yes. But to fear God is to not understand Him or our purpose.
In my mind there are different types of fears. There is an animalistic fear, such as our fear of wild animals and such, and then there is a deeper fear which is deeply interwoven with love, like the fear a child has of disappointing his parents due to the love he has for them.
This is the type of fear I hope to get into my life... sadly it's not there yet... but hopefully soon :)
I think ppl have mentioned it above, but fear of Allah SWT goes hand-in-hand with expecting His Mercy (in this life and the next)...
“And My mercy encompasses all things, and I shall decree it for those who fear Me.” Sûrah al-A`râf : 156]
“He is worthy of being feared and worthy of granting forgiveness.” Sûrah al-Muddaththir : 56]
“And whoever fears Allah – He will pardon him his sins and grant him a great reward.” Sûrah al-Talâq : 5]
And those who believe in Allah SWT dont always fear him as suggested above... the most central act of worship; salat, how many ppl do we know who dont offer them regularly? or offer it whenever it is convenient to them!
