Why do we die?

Why do we exist? Why do we love? Why do we hate? Why do we die?

Does philosophy hold answers to these questions?

Re: Why do we die?

We have to wait for Philosophy to login, but my wild guess is that she would have no clue at all.

Re: Why do we die?

:smack:

Re: Why do we die?

we live to serve Allah and then die to meet Him and receive our rewards ... if we did NOT serve Allah then get ready for the punishment for not doing so.

Re: Why do we die?

The answer to your question is, "because of Allah's will"
He created us, he created the entire universe and its HE who can do anything and everything HE wants........ & everything happens according to HIS will.

Re: Why do we die?

LPs question is - Can "philosophy" answer those questions ...

We can derive Islamic responses to these but that would evade the philosophical question.

Exist, Love, Hate, Die

I think the more pertinent question to ask here is "why do we ask 'why'?"

It seems that other living organisms do not have a propensity to ask that question. The clear and obvious reason is that "we have a need for everything to have a purpose" ... Why why? .... because "Because" ...

Rather than going down the distraction of asking "whether we truly exist or not, or whether love and hate are real or not or whether we die or not" we will make the assumption that all of these are true.

It means that that our 'a priori' must be that:

To exist has a purpose, to love and hate have purpose and to die also has purpose ... it is for this reason why we ask why they are, since if we gathered that something had no purpose then we would be stupid to ask why that something is when we already believe about it that it has no purpose. And if we find anything that has no purpose - you will be sure somebody one day will find a purpose for it or at least a "use" to some fruitful or disastrous end. So we anticipate and hold firm to the idea that one day we will know "why" ...

So it can be said ... that we "exist" to find out the answer "why we exist, love, hate and die" ... Such that life is a journey to learn what we previously did not know ... and if do not achieve that then there is nothing separating us from animals. Not that we need to be separated from them, but we would be sure our fullest potential is not achieved.

So why do we love? Well "loving" helps us create impetus and motivation for the things we want to put in their rightful place.
And why do we hate? And "hating" helps us avoid the wrongfully placed things as far as our perceptions take us - whether they are truly put where they belong is a different matter.
And why do we die? To conclude that we are not giving purpose to anything ... in reality we are given purpose and we are discovering what that purpose is and none of it belongs to us, but rather we are subject to a Purpose that beyond us.

Whether this answers the question ... I don't know ...

Re: Why do we die?

Motivation: We exist for a purpose and it’s obvious that our existence has purpose because things without purpose are absurd. So philosophy can tell us that we exist for a purpose but to find what that purpose is, we need to refer to spirituality.
Answer: To love and to hate are kind of natural instincts that collectively tend to serve to further our existence. For example we love our relatives and friends and hate our enemies to serve our wish to keep ourselves safe/satisfy and continue exist.
And probably the answer to your question why we die is, 'everything that has a beginning, has an end'.

Re: Why do we die?

yeah things are not that clear with philosophical viewpoint but these are interesting points.

Re: Why do we die?

As far as my understanding is concerned ... answers to your questions are:

1: We exist because the one who can create (Allah) decided to create us.

2 and 3: We love and hate because the one who created us, gave us feelings to love something or someone, and hate something or someone (to control feelings and be just in our dealings, is our duty).

4: We die, because the one who created us has decided that humans he created would not live forever in human phase (on earth) but die from this phase and move on to next phase. We do not know the first or last stage of our phases, but live the life in phase we are before moving to next phase.

Re: Why do we die?

in Islam, there are only TWO so-called 'phases' [as per your terminology] ... this phase on earth and the eternal phase in the hereafter.

Re: Why do we die?

Well … :)

Dear brother, according to my knowledge, Allah created all souls at the same time in distance past … and also told humans many things ... and souls also promissed to Allah many things, that they would abide forever, in all circumsances.

Phase 1: Since that day (day soul got created) to the day one is born in this world.

Phase 2: When soul are born in this world, they are made to forget (or put into their subconscious rather than conscious) a lot of past so that they can get tested in this world. Birth attaches soul with body through Nafs (as glue). Thus life in this world.

Phase 3: Once we would leave this world, or leave the body we have, or that our Nafs would die and thus link of our soul would get disconnected with our body, soul would again get back to ‘the world of souls’, thus life after death but before day of judgment.

Phase 4: On judgment day, our soul would get a body again (in what shape and form we do not exactly know), and that would be a phase of its own.

Phase 5: After judgment, our soul would reach a place of 'bliss' or 'gloom', in what form and shape we do not exactly know, most likely we would have some sort of body, and that would final phase ... or is it?

I mentioned the phases that I know of (or at least according to my knowledge and belief), but only Allah knows the best. :)

Anyhow, I fear that there could be another phase waiting for us, and that could be:

Phase 6: It is possible that in far future, Allah may decide complete annihilation (extinction) for most souls, replacing us with new creations ... or selecting some from us to live and ending existence of others … who knows ... and that would be end time for our soul to exist that can be called ‘existing forever’ as far as our soul is concerned, as ‘forever state for soul’ mentioned in Quran could mean 'until soul exists’ (be that in heaven or hell).

Re: Why do we die?

And the phase that came before this life ... When the souls were created ...

Re: Why do we die?

Thank you all for the replies :)

Re: Why do we die?

absolutely true, because i saw the title and was gonna post questions of my own! :bummer:

life :frowning:

Re: Why do we die?

i know LP, these answers were not satisfying–if not outright annoying.

we can discuss if you still wish to do so:chai:

Re: Why do we die?

i would like to know.

Re: Why do we die?

Naturally we die because our organs deteriorate.

Philosophically we die because what has a beginning has an end. You will find that natural equalbirium all throughout nature. You will see a pack of lions killing a bunch of leopard babies, while as brutal as it seems it balances the natural order. Nature keeps everything in check.

We had the predinosaurs reptiles I think post Cambrian period. They went extinct and we had dinosaurs take over. Then the dinosaurs, they died out. Had to for mammals to take over. Just the way things are.

Imagine if our world ran on immortality right now, overcrowding would be the least of our worries :hehe:

Re: Why do we die?

we die to make room for our comming generations.

Re: Why do we die?

Re: Why do we die?

We die as a sign to those who remain in the world that they should be thinking about what they have prepared for the next world
