Why do we backbite?

Is it for our satisfaction or to generally degrade the other person due to jealousy/ anger?

Re: Why do we backbite?

Snickers, sweety, you are pregnant and should not be thinking of all this negative stuff. Just relax and enjoy and positive vibes to you and your baby:)

Re: Why do we backbite?

^^ :rotfl:

Ppl backbite coz it gives them pleasure and they do it when they dont have anything else 2 do. Whoever backbites doesnt benefit from it any way…

Re: Why do we backbite?

God, it's rampant in our community. Somebody is too poor, is too cheap, didn't give a nice gift, don't have any taste, someone is too rich, waste money, show off. Maybe backbiting exists somewhere between insecurity and jealousy. As though one is afraid of being viewed as that 'poor' person but jealous that they're not exactly that 'rich' person. One is not content just being themselves.

Re: Why do we backbite?

at first i thought it was the result of having too much time on your hands and nothing else to talk about…:bukbuk2:
but i’ve seen enough working/busy women do it and so threw out that theory. :frowning:

Re: Why do we backbite?

People usually backbite because they are insecure and the best defense is offense.
As long as we talk about the bad things in other people, the focus will remain off me.

It is unfortunate but it is a huge part of society.

Re: Why do we backbite?

We backbite because it's fun! Gossip is yummy.

Re: Why do we backbite?

I haven’t come across a lot of backbiting…but the times i did, i presume stemed from jealousy, which turned into anger and then finally the person resorted to backbiting as a form of revenge i guess…thankfully, ppl around me and in our communities don’t backbite.

Re: Why do we backbite?

Ok, what exactly IS backbiting ??

Re: Why do we backbite?

Generally, human being does it to feel "better than him", to some extent "holier than thou" IMO.

Re: Why do we backbite?

I think some of the members have answered the 'why' part.....:)

I think, we now need to focus on 'how to stop or at least control it'

My mother has this one thing in practice, for past few years.....whenever we get together and our chatting somehow starts to steer towards backbiting....she'll say ''aao koi baat karaiN'' (let's talk ) n we all would get the hint 'baat means ' anything without backbiting' and we'll stop.....this technique even works in big gatherings too ....coz nobody gets offended like when you ask 'stop backbiting' n at least all of us sisters n cousins do know whats meant by 'aao koi baat karaiN' :)
Ammi often quotes a hadith with a very deep meaning....but I think I'm going off topic already....so I better stop.

Re: Why do we backbite?

Well Ive been complemented on how I never backbite by my friends who know me well. They say they've never met anyone like me.
Its a pity my family don't know that.

The way I think is what reason have I to think or say anything about so and so person I dont know whats in their heart only God knows that. Things aren't always what they seem. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Beacause thats how I would like to be treated. So thats why I never backbite. :)
