Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Why do they say such things in Pakistan?

WASHINGTON, Oct 31: A senior US official has categorically said that in a long-term perspective India is a more important ally for Washington than Pakistan.

On Wednesday The Washington Post quoted senior US officials as saying that Pakistan’s failure to crush militants has frayed America’s relations with the country.

“India simply must, as a long-term consideration, matter more for us than Pakistan,’’ James Clad, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for South and Southeast Asia, told a group of journalists in a conference call from the Pentagon.

“The US-India strategic potential is very, very profound,” Mr Clad said. “It’s been slow in coming – I think it will be slow in coming in the future – but it is steady. The trend lines are unmistakable,” he said.

Mr Clad said even Pakistan’s leading role in the US-led war against terrorism does not affect India’s strategic significance as a long-term US ally.

Referring to the growth of the Indian economy in the past one decade, he said: “India, I think, is seen as a potentially power with global reach.”

Mr Clad noted that Indo-US defence ties have continued to grow along with commercial and economic ties between the two countries.

India is on a major course to ramp up its military infrastructure, Mr Clad noted, with a multi-billion budget at they ready to purchase, among other equipment, 126 multi-role combat aircraft.

“It is the largest external-announced defence procurement budget in the world,” Mr Clad said. “And people are obviously interested in this.”

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

They are right and Pakistan should play its cards accordingly.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Honesty is the best policy.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

What cards? We don't have any cards left to play. :(

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Who needs them... Whats benefit has the alliance with US ever done for Pakistan anyways...

Maybe this will be an insentive for Pak to be more self reliant.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

To be more self reliant. Establish democracy and strengthen your own institutions. And stop being dictated by Condi all the time. Stop importing PMs from WB. And learn to negotiate for maximum benefit.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Return of BB and passing of NRO one of those joker cards being played by Pakistan, where the dealer was United States.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Those are cards? I thought by "cards" you mean the leverage that we have over the US.

BTW, those are not cards...those things if implemented fully can help us get out of the mess we're in now. The only card we have with uncle is...if we pull out of the war on terror, and that is not in our interest b/c jihadis are much more of a threat to Pakistan than they're to the US.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

I did say, learn to neotiate for maximum benefit. Not get treated like $hit. Like getting night goggles and then return every two weeks.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

sorry to blow my own trumpet but couple of days ago on this website. i pretty much wrote the same thing this u.s. official is saying. bottomline, u.s. will never be a reliable ally and its foolish for pakistanis to expect otherwise. this does not mean however that pakistani government should support al qaeedah. our long term goal should be to shake off our dependence on the u.s. which means strengthening relationship with cheen and muslim countries.

pakistan however will turn into a pariah state if jehadis are not eliminated. neither the chinese nor arabs want to see terrorism and pak will be seen as no go area by all countries if pak continues to act as a base for degenrate arabs like bin laden.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Because in Pakistan, there now is freedom of speech.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

correction: selective freedom of speech. if its pro-government its allowed otherwise no.

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

Correction: It is selective hearing from anti-govt people. You obviously close your ears when the opposition speaks. Not a bad thing if I might add. :)

Re: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?

The world is all about economics. Pakistan, or any islamic country for that matter, do not and never had, economic agendas. They are mostly about enforcing shariat law at the gross root level.
