Yes they do take away the passport and its very inconvenient. They did lose aunt's british passport. she was accompanying us ... we had to go through a hell...
Usually they are very rude on the airports especially with Pakistanis....
In saudi arabia, i would advise two things
never wear shalwar kameez
always speak in english.
and the reasons:
from my understanding they do it because the do not want us to escape...many people stay there and do not return..(thats what i have heard but i doubt it)
but to be honest they still have a mentality and a false superiority complex....
