In my experience men pretend to do a lot of things simply because it is considered politically correct. They don't actually believe in those concepts, nor would they admit to being that way in front of their macho buddies. But because the man that "respects" women is considered to be a catch, they will say that they have a great deal of "respect" for you, your mother, your sister, your best friend.....etc., etc.
