Why do the bride and groom sit on a stage?

Re: Why do the bride and groom sit on a stage?

I don’t have a problem with the stage/throne nor with the singing-dancing or the brides heavy dress and jewellery as long as it’s segregated, I don’t want any other men ogling at my done up pretty bride or watch my girl-cousins and sisters etc. dancing.

We have segregated weddings in our culture but the groom and his male relatives usually go freely from hall to hall which I don’t like that’s why when I get married I’m going to have two separate halls, one for the gents and the other for the ladies, the girls can have one raised ‘throne’ in the centre of the hall (original I know) or at the front as usual, usual Desi wedding feast, traditional girly songs and dancing etc. and in the men’s area (I’m not sitting on no throne, that’ll just be gay) we can have like a dj. do bhangra/rap/dance music, have an alcohol-free bar (the point? i don't know), break dancing and plenty of spicy Indian food.

As far as I recall, only the nikaah was a sit-down more formal affair. First there was the actual nikkah and dua, that is obviously a serious time. Then the different rasms, and finally the endless line of friends and family for group photographs etc.

Valima was pretty relaxed and casual affair. I think we had about 500-700 people in two different functions and in both we were going around, talking to friends and taking pictures with them at their tables (they were both sit-down dinners rather then standing buffets). Since there is pretty much nothing in valima except to mingle with the guests and enjoy the food, so there is really no need to sit on the stage all the time.

It isn't as bad as it looks in the wedding videos because no one is staring at you while you're up there. Mainly people come and congratulate you and get their pics made. We sat on the stage for a while and then had to walk around and say salaam to the older ladies who couldn't climb up to the stage. And like Suroor said, you don't want to be walking around too much w/ that heavy lehnga.
