Its frustrating! 2 examples:

My dads friend got a phone call from Pakistan and was asked to send 500 pounds so that his 10,000 pounds (that he mysteriously won off somewhere) will be released to a western union account, he thought this was genuine!

Another so called friend - (with me being totally against it) is meeting someone he hardly knows, after talking to them for a whole day, for the sake of it from an online medium.

Have you encountered other incidents like this?

I am reminded of an incident. I went to this bank in a posh area of Islamabad once. I heard a guy working at the bank telling a customer, that one of the banks client who was a profession man, I think maybe a doctor thought that he had won a lot of money as he got an email from somewhere. Some people are educated but still remain stupid.
