Why do people feel it is important to have contact with family members just because??

here we go,
Why do people feel it is important to have a contact members just becoz they are “Family”??? I don’t personally have a problem with it myself
Even in situations where spending time with the family member (especially parents here) causes emotional upset and stress to you?

because

they are mom and dad
and they will always be mom and dad

and no matter how much they frustrate me...
i love them.

depends on what u mean by family members. I have cousins that I have not spoken to in ages, and dont realy feel that there is a need to, we are not close have little in comon so why force it.

well been in contact with family memebers just shows what importance they have in ur life and parents mean more then just family members.

This thread touched my heart.......
I am desperate to have regular normal contact with my mum, she means the world to me, but seemingly I don't to her...everytime we start getting on she succumbs to my sister's brainwashing and distances herself again...
Just last night I cried myself to sleep because she rang to tell me that she is going to India with my sister.....yet she was too "ill" to come stay with me - which is only a 3 hour drive.

Just as she had called and I was crying, my cousin turns up (he is my mum's cousins son) but I love him like an older brother...and I just pouredmy heart out......
He tried reasoning...BUT I just want to have that contact with my mum ... drip fed contact is worse than no contact at all....I have had NO contact with my dad since 1984 and it doesn't hurt me....

if family members r parents then its naturall feelings n should b...as far as the concern is abut other family members like czns or many other then i think this should b or could b occasional or formal contact,,but very close brothers sisters or the most imp ur parents deserve all this...

It's a choice people make based on their priorities. For those who say family is everything, 'warts and all'. On some level you have to accept difficult people and difficult situations but it's a choice whether you want to be closely involved. I have cousins who live their own independent lives and even a simple question, "So what's new with you these days?" brings the response, "Nothing to report". It's as though they're putting up a wall, 'don't pry into my life'. So even though these cousins keep others at a distance and remain cold, I still have kindness and compassion for them. I want them to know that they're family and I'm not so judgemental that I would push them away no matter what kind of life they're living.
