I grew up in Pakistan, spent close to 19 years of my life there. I never saw a situation where just a group of people randomly chanting Allahu Akbar. Or maybe I missed out? We normally say that during prayers, or during sermons in mosque or during a religious rally which is fine. But if you open any youtube video of muslim … they always seem to be yelling Allah Akbar .. I saw it when Libyans were firing guns during revolution, Egyptians were shouting it in Tahir square, even when they were showing a mass graves, or even in train? I don’t get it. Is it like war chant? or a celebration chant? I haven’t seen this thing in Pakistan. Is it just an Arab thing?
But I think they way they use it … which is almost always in times when they are shooting at someone, or showing dead bodies, or showing helicopters dropping bomb .. they chant it. And it gives bad PR to such a wonderful word. I am pretty sure if I chant Allahu Akbar in Time Square, I would be in cuffs. Because non-muslims usually see it as an offense because all they see is bunch of muslims chanting Allahu Akbar when either firing a gun, or in protests, or in bombs and what not.
I know many of you will disagree but its okay. Thats why we can have this discussion. Is it more common in arabs? You think it gives bad PR to such a beautiful word because Allah Akbar simply means God is Great. I know maybe they are asking for Allah mian’s help but idk I am split up on this issue
Re: Why do muslims yell/chant 'Allahu Akbar" in so many different situation?
Thats exactly what I think! Allahu Akbar has got negative connotations to it because of these emotional lunatics. When we tested the nuclear bomb for the first in Pak, someone shouted it loudly because it was an achievement and we thanked Allah. Army jawans also say it too.
Re: Why do muslims yell/chant 'Allahu Akbar" in so many different situation?
I've hear it used when expressing amazement or pleasure and in some cases before disappointment. When hearing it from people around me, I've never found it to be objectionable.

Yeah it's common around me too. For something as simple as getting up from his place my uncle uses it.
Re: Why do muslims yell/chant 'Allahu Akbar" in so many different situation?
Very easy to remember..just remember height “unchai” with Akbar..so the opposite is subhanAllah
I heard it also when plane taking off..first pilots says Allahu akbar Allahu akbar{because its going up (bulandi)} twice if i am not mistaken and then surah zukhruf verse as a dua e safar!!
Re: Why do muslims yell/chant 'Allahu Akbar" in so many different situation?
here I would like to give my suggestion here , ALLAH O AKBAR means ALLAH sab say bara hy ( ALLAH is the greatest ). Here the point is why Muslims chant it is because they have deep faith in ALLAH, it shows there trust while in any problem or in any thing which is out of human believes kindly do read it Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).
Re: Why do muslims yell/chant 'Allahu Akbar" in so many different situation?
It is to do zikr of Allah(swt).
When our jawans chant Allah HuAkbar, they get renewed energy and jazba that has no limits. They achieve great things.
It scares the hell out of non-muslim opponents, such as terrorists, or enemy.
