Why do men go bald and not women

Why is it that generally it is men who bald, and not women. Most of my male friends in their mid 20s from school that I get reacquainted with look like fryer tuck and some of them are half lit! The girls are ALL fine. Genes? Diet? Stress? Responsibility?

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

ever heard about nagging ?

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Women have way too many hair so when we start losing hair, they just thin down and you are unable to see bald patches. :hmmm:

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Estrogen.

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Could this be referred to as discrimination on a divine scale mama? :hehe:

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Ok, here’s a link about estrogen and hair loss, explains why women dont experience hair loss like men…just an extra note - when pregnant, a womans estrogen levels are outta sight…so she does not lose hair that would otherwise normally fall (average people lose between 10 and 100 hairs a day!) anyway, once she gives birth and estrogen plummets again, it seems like she’s losing tons of hair but that really isnt the case - its just all those hairs that would have dropped out over the course of 9 months. Interesting yeah?

Estrogen and Hair Loss. The crucial link.

^ sorry Mo3, but never trust commercial websites for scientific medical info:

Here's an abstract from a scientific review paper:

Dermatol Ther. 2008 Sep-Oct;21(5):314-28. Androgens and hair growth.
by Randall VA (Centre for Skin Sciences, School of Life Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford, UK.)

Hair's importance in human communication means that abnormalities like excess hair in hirsutism or hair loss in alopecia cause psychological distress. Androgens are the main regulator of human hair follicles, changing small vellus follicles producing tiny, virtually invisible hairs into larger intermediate and terminal follicles making bigger, pigmented hairs. The response to androgens varies with the body site as it is specific to the hair follicle itself. Normally around puberty, androgens stimulate axillary and pubic hair in both sexes, plus the beard, etc. in men, while later they may also inhibit scalp hair growth causing androgenetic alopecia. Androgens act within the follicle to alter the mesenchyme-epithelial cell interactions, changing the length of time the hair is growing, the dermal papilla size and dermal papilla cell, keratinocyte and melanocyte activity. Greater understanding of the mechanisms of androgen action in follicles should improve therapies for poorly controlled hair disorders like hirsutism and alopecia.

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

man... the worst part of going bald is that its extended to a period of time till you see the final result of hair loss. If it was to happen overnight, one might just freak out for some time and then get back to the normal routine.. but seeing yourself in the mirror every morning and then saying to yourself " damN! how much more?" is the worst part of it. Its just hereditary.. blame your parents for it..

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Re: Why do men go bald and not women

Both MMo3 and Nescio are right and not mutually exclusive.

Scalp is a different skin than rest of the body because of receptor modulation differences.

Scalp of men who lose hair than those who do not, have higher androgenic activity. Antiandrogenic chemicals have been used for hair growth.

Roughly speaking:

Androgens= growth of hair in various parts of body but loss of hair at scalp.

Estrogen= Growth of hair at scalp

When BP medication minoxidil was used, people grew more hair. Later it was found that it has some anti-androgenic activity. Sprays of minoxidil are still available but the benefit is not long lasting and hair which grow are small and weak.

Its the sign of 'maleness' to lose hair.....:-)

Note: I did not say 'manliness'.
