Why do majors like Engineering and Computer Sciences attract the most nerdiest people

This thread will be full of generalizations, and please no examples of your KGS and LUMS friends at Harvard and MIT.

Why do majors like engineering and computer science attract the most nerdiest people? It’s like if you are a non-social, ugly and fat person who has no sense of clothing or style, then these majors are for you. A common class looked like this: 20 foreigners who stunk, 5-6 extremely nerdy Americans who could only talk about video games and were scared of women, 1 girl who despite being unattractive is really popular since she is the only girl, and maybe one or two non nerds who some how got stuck taking this class.

Compare that to medical students. Most seem very well rounded, and are not exactly nerds despite the fact that medical students have to study more than most engineering or computer science students do.

Wow..talk about stereotyping!

I am a vivacious, attractive, intelligent former computer programmer so I personally do not fit your stereotype of computer science nerds. Many of my friends would also not fit this stereotype. And none of us stink, I promise!

Being from a computer science background and married to a doctor, I can assure you that medical education is far less difficult to master than engineering/technical sciences. Medical fields requires a lot of memorization and my own hubby admitted that whilst in medical college he only attended 45% of his classes and passed by merely studying hard for the last two months of the college year. I could never ever imagine an engineer getting away with doing that and passing with ease.

The 20 foreigners who stunk were probably not aware of deodorant due to cultural backgrounds, not because they are nerds. When I lived in Pakistan, most people did not use body fragrances.

The 5-6 American nerds probably are intimidated by women because of the stereotypes others have about people like them!

And pretty people have brains too, they dont need to get stuck in classes. I enjoyed being in my classes..nobody forced me there.

Maybe you need to open your mind and your heart a little more and try to get to know some of these people. You may be pleasantly surprised at how normal 'we' are!!

WildHalcyon… everthing you wrote is what i was just going to write… apart from the fact that i did Information Systems Engineering at Imperial… otherwise everything else is exactly the same.. freaky :hmmm:

So are you are former Brit as well?..I am assuming that you are referring to the Imperial college in London?

Well, you should have included the sciences (natural or social) in your hypothesis.

lol! funny and spot on!

i myself did undergrad in Electronic Eng, MSc and now doing a PhD and also married to an (almost) doctor. he has to learn a lot of material but it's nothing like the mental strain of doing physical sciences.

would say, 70-80% of most classes are the nerdy kind that don't care about how they look but that's because they work damn hard to get a first (or whatever the american equivalent is). i'm sure they are then crying about how they didn't have a gf at uni when they come out as a fresh graduate with starting salary of £40k, whilst those 'well rounded' (read: like to get pissed every weekend) doctors are slaving away for a meagre £25k after 6 years of study.

anyway, pooh, i was probably the least nerdiest person in my class and i love me my videogames. to be honest, the majority of nerdy physical science types are not into gaming (they don't have the time).

Average people, some nerds, some dumb, some party animals, some other type, etc.

I don't really have a take on specific majors. My generalizations come from observations in my classes. I studied Comp Sci, so that is what I observed. I was part of the nerdy ones, but my dress didn't comprise of dress pants, chappal, and free t-shirt that said AMD or Intel (guess the ethnicity this is a stereotype of).

No joke, but one time a class had to be "aired out" after a graduate comp sci class (full of intl students from those two countries where most engineering graduate students come from).

The main business building was called "the land of beautiful people". Yeah, very rasict and xenophobic, but there is a reason why it was named such.

dont get me wrong, halcyon. im a flamboyantly vivacious and attractive chicken farmer with impeccable social skills who manages to smell of wild orchid blooms on a tropical summer night, even while plucking feathers off freshly slaughtered bird carcasses.

and whats interesting is, you can not skip even a few days of farming and get away with it. my engineer pals skip 21.6% of classes and still get straight A’s.

we are so much cooler. :snooty:
