Why didn't 80's Bollywood music sound like the one in West?

I am only talking about the Western rock and pop inspired songs from the 80’s. The sound just wasn’t right. It didn’t sound Western at all, and it didn’t sound like fusion music either. It was just a weird mix. Up until the mid 80’s, disco music seemed to be the main inspiration. Even then, it didn’t sound like disco. After that, the inspiration changed to early 80’s pop music. Even then, the sound just wasn’t right.
The beats sounded strange, and the synthesizer produced sounds sounded very cheap.

Just listen to the Rhythm Is Gonna Get You and compare it with the beloved Oye Oye song. Or compare that one Mithun song with Billy Jean. You will see what I am talking about. I think until A.R Rehman came on the scene, Bollywood music lacked refinement and sophistication.

I find your definition of Bollywood Music in the 80s rather confining. May be you’re talking about Bollywood Pop Music in the 80s…??? then your comparison with that specific genre of Western music might be more warranted. Otherwise, you haven’t even considered the likes of R.D. Burman who was perhaps the most prolific musician in Bollywood at the time and his music can’t really be compared to the West.
