Russians also kept invading a large part of the Empire when it grew weak. Bulgaria, Romania etc were all forced free and Ottomans were forced to sign humiliating deals. Someone correct me if I am wrong but an example was that Russians were allowed to build as many churches in Istanbul and under the deal they were allowed to put troops in such 'zones'', in the heart of Ottoman land, whenever they desired. Ottomans also controlled countries with a majority Christian populace, who found natural support amongst the Orthodox Christians in Russia.

I think that hatred was used in Afghan was as well. The literature that came during that period (or now from people who were key players in Afghan war) always came with stuff higlighting atrocities of Russia over Muslim states.
