I think the answer is in what we were actually given by God/Allah...the gift of free will. The ability and responsibilty to decide for ourselves what is right and what is wrong. Every person on the planet has the responsibilty to live a good life and to face the day of judgement hopefully with pride and/or with regret for failings. Anyway, the gift of free will allows us each to decide what we do, how we live, how we treat others.
So, maybe there are more non muslims on the planet than there are muslims. But this should not matter yeah? Just go on living as a good person and others will surely see this and follow. It almost never fails, when people meet a truly good, serene and moral person they want to be like that too.
oops....sorry thats not a very understandable reply for a 7 yr old....I'll think it over.

I would say something close to what Mama said
"Beta - Allah likes all his creations - muslims and non muslims. Allah has created many types of people and creatures. Cute things like kittens but also things like snakes and crocodiles. Everything has a purpose in world (that line might be a bit much for 7 year old)
Allah likes when muslims pray, don't lie or cheat, be good to our families, listen to mama and baba, respect our elders - give to the the needy.
Allah also created Non muslims also and he likes it when they do good things as well.
In your school - there are some nice kids right. So Allah likes them too.
A long time ago - there were many more muslims. There are countries where there are more muslims than non muslims."
(if you want you can explain the concept of "people of the book" but again it might be confusing for a 7 year old)

He did it to test the Muslims (in my opinion).** And you can use simple examples to explain this to your 7-year-old. For example...Allah gave more money to some people and less money to other.......to test the rich. To see if they will share their money with the poor. And He also did it to test the poor. To see if the poor will be grateful/thankful for all the other blessings that they have (because money isn't everything).
Similarly, Allah made more non-Muslims to test the Muslims. To see if they will still be strong enough to follow their religion even though they are not in the majority. And He wants to see if Muslims will spread their religion in the proper way.

All answers above try to explain the "why" with full effort made to keep the respect but...
Although this question is valid from a little child it should not baffle adults.
Technically the question is flawed. Allah did not make less muslims. Allah gave them all the guidance they needed but people strayed away from it again and again...and as time went the final Prophet ( PBUH) came for the final guidance and the final scripture.
All prophets came with same guidance...but the name "islam" is for the Ummah of Hazrat Muhammad's (PBUH) and his message came almost 610 years after Jesus and almost 5000 years (approximately) after Moses. So Jews and Christians have had a headstart. Again its not that there are more Christians by default but that they have bee around longer and hence their numbers are larger.
Also I think it would be a good idea to barely mention to children that not everything that Allah does should be questioned. But that is something that most adults dont even understand.

Allah did not make non-muslims ...Allah has let us choose. thats why the test and then judgement after death. If Allah Wished He cud have Made all of us Muslims. but he did not. he GAve us choice.

Answer...Sure you can choose. Just be aware that if you make the wrong choice, I'll send you to military academy till you "see the light"!! j/k!!
The thing is to have them understand and accept their religion as a good way of life, something they want to do, something that they can take pride in. If these things are instilled early and reinforced often, its almost guaranteed that they'll follow it and find solace, comfort and serenity in it for the rest of their days....and thats the most important thing yeah?

Tell the child ...............a mother loves all her children........even the ones that are very "BAD" and they do not listen to their Mother* and make her very Angry*......!
**Allah Loves all his creation..........even Kafirs who totally offend him............
Allahs Love even for Kafirs is ten times more than a Mothers Love for each of her children...:)

its complecated if parent makes it complicated.....what does Allah look like and why are their non-muslims...such answers should be kept very simple...Allah cannot be seen. thats it. you have to believe in your heart .... and ppl are not muslims not bcz Allah made them so. its their own fault that they are on wrong path. shaitan made them so.
and show by your actions. children follow their parents.

My 6 year old daughter has asked me if Allah loves everyone or only muslims. I asked her for her opinion and this is what she said:
"Allah loves all people except the ones who are bad. Shaitaan loves the bad people."

What kind of atmosphere is this that 6 or 7 year olds are asking questions about "muslims" and "non-muslims"???
I am yet to hear about hindu or xtian kids asking questions like these !
One more reason to be glad that my ancestors did not convert....

wiseguyin, I'm from India and trust me I've heard little children from other faiths asking such questions about other religions.
One reason for muslim children to be a bit more "vocal" about these things is maybe because we start off their Islamic education at a young age which parallels their regular school education. So sometimes there are all types of questions that are asked.
We can handle it quite well.

I am from India - AND i AM a non-muslim - till about standard 10, I was not even aware of an "us" and "them" attitude..... No wonder the brain washing starts early in you guys ....

No there's no "brainwashing" wiseguyin. We start educating the children early on because our holy book, Qur'an is in Arabic language and for most of us, this isn't our first language, so in addition to their regular curriculums, they have additional things to learn. And in the process they also learn basic Islamic education.
However, I would really appreciate it if you stay on topic here. We are all trying to stay respectful towards each other.
