Why can't we just wipe them out?

What could Pakistan lose by simply wiping out people like the rebels in Waziristan?

I know I’ll get a whole lot of crap for this, but what good do the practically autonomous, ultra-religious, Taliban-loving tribespeople in Waziristan do for Pakistan as a country? I doubt they pay taxes, they aid the Taliban and al-Qaeda, they shoot Pakistani soldiers, and bomb Pakistani infrastructure. They yield very little income to the state, and generally just behave like dicks.

  1. Pakistan will be firmly reprimanded by the UN, but so what? The UN can be disobeyed with impunity. Case in point, Israel.

  2. Pakistan will have to deal with more terrorist attacks from the jihadis. However, with proper intelligence, and a sufficient show of force, the Pakistan Army should be able to make it very clear that they won’t be messed with. None of this half-assed appeasement. Crush the enemy.

  3. Pakistan will lose some respect in world politics. Not for very long, though. World leaders will whine for the liberal media, and secretly celebrate the elimination of a bunch of primitive fascists.

  4. Amnesty International and other human rights organizations will list Pakistan as a very bad country complete with lists of atrocities and photos. So what?

There’s probably a lot more, but I’m in a hurry. If I think of anything else I’ll post it.

Re: Why can't we just wipe them out?

Couple of Problems...
Militants hide among innocent people, who are generally just victims who get caught in the cross fire.

Also many in the military would refuse to fire on their own.. They can only be ordered to do so much.

Pakistani leaders have more to worry about from internal opposition. Attacking the tribal areas isnt going to go down well with the rest of the country...

Pakistan might gain some support externally, but that is worthless if the gain the resentment of their own people.

The best thing to do is to go after these terrorists in a way that target and specific.. This coupled other methods... So has to be a multi pronged attack.

Re: Why can't we just wipe them out?

How is what you're suggesting different from what hitler tried with the holocaust or saddam hussein tried with kurds? if anything like that is tried pakistan will cease to exist.

And how do you wipe a regoion out? You mean nuke strike? Every neigboring country will simply invade and take over since the nukes will affect them too

Re: Why can't we just wipe them out?

Jihadis can spring up anywhere. They are not limited to regions or ethnicities.

Re: Why can't we just wipe them out?

The Kurds threatened national unity, Saddam was justified in wiping them out. He was justified because, being in charge of his country, it was his responsibility to ensure the nation's survival.

Hitler, Stalin, and Saddam had the guts to use a little (hahaha, a lot) of brutality to get what they wanted, and still keep the adoration of the people. There was no appeasement. The choices were obey or die. It simplified things.

I'm not saying the same tactics those dictators used will work in Pakistan, but their ruthlessness when faced with internal threats to their country is something that can be studied and learned from.

Obviously, a nuke strike would be stupid. Right now, though, th Pakistan Army is pussyfooting around with smaller amounts of half-hearted, goal-less men because they don't want to hurt people's feelings, when a properly organized task force with authority to annihilate any enemy would work wonderfully.

They can spring up and get shot down just as fast. If the government is ruthless enough, and if Pakistanis will stop whining at their government when they take out a place like Lal Masjid, the jihadis wouldn't come back.

That is the big IF isn't it?
