LONDON (Reuters) - A British dentist has been banned from working after allowing her unqualified boyfriend to carry out dental work on patients in her surgery, the profession’s UK regulatory body said Tuesday.

Mojgan Azari was found guilty of serious professional misconduct for letting boyfriend Omid Amidi-Mazaheri work at her practices in south London between 2002 and 2003, the General Dental Council (GDC) said.

The boyfriend worked on more than 600 people, drilling out cavities without local anesthetic and installing expensive fillings that crumbled within days, often leaving patients in agony, the BBC said.

The GDC said Azari had allowed him to carry on working in her surgeries for seven months after she had been warned that he was unregistered.

“The direct result of your actions was that a recall exercise involving several hundred patients had to be mounted, to establish whether they required further dental remedial action,” the GDC said in its ruling.

“This caused the patients considerable distress and inconvenience, and cost the National Health Service (NHS) approximately 180,000 pounds ($317,000).”

The GDC said Azari had pleaded guilty in February 2005 to four counts of obtaining money by deception from the NHS in relation to the case and had been jailed for 12 months.

The BBC said Amidi-Mazaheri, an Iranian national, had received a two-year sentence for similar offences.

Consequently the GDC said its conduct committee had decided to strike Azari’s name from the register.

“In view of the gravity of the offences and their effect in undermining public confidence and the damage to the reputation of the profession, the committee is satisfied that the only appropriate sanction in this case is erasure,” it said.

Wow! That's crazy!
Though I am dumbfounded by the article, I am not entirely surprised.
I hate NHS in the UK.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

i think think the NHS in england is a fantastic system...i mean its all relative and if we compare it to pakistan or india we realise how good it is...treating all irrespective of class and finacial status...i also understand people may have experienced problems with the NHS as is quite possible with any kind of organisation with but i personally don't think that overall there is anything wrong with it at all...its excellent

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

^yea , the Nhs is fantastic, by the time you get to see the doctor, your infection /disease is over anyway. they believe in spiritual healing.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

These people are whingers...they get the job done free and then complain....

anyway...its their own fault...why did they eat all those sweets

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

are dentists free? really. prolly the NHS onez are but then by the time you'd get an appointment you'd have lost all ur teeth anyway.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

So, can the people who got the fillings done by some boyfriend sue the NHS for damages? Or their only consolation is to actually get a dentist who isn’t a pretender?

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

now imagine if this were to happen in the great US of A :D

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

My several reasons of leaving UK, one was NHS. I had a fracture in my pinki (toe) that happened during a gym exercise, I had to wait 16 hours before a doctor could see me, who told me there is not fracture & didn't even order X-ray. I went home & after few hours I had to call an ambulance because of pain, they arranged X-Ray & found out fracture. This is NHS, now all those who say its an excellent system should wake up.

I think best system is in NL or France on a private insurance (particulier), where u pay 2000 Euroes per year & get all medical facilities free including medicines.

Dentists are not free in UK or in even most of European countries unless u are covered by some kind of insurance or are a khairaatee (I mean if u are on dole).

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

5abi I bet you a hundred dollors that it does

(but I dont know where)

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

Najim, if you're paying 2000 euros a year, how are the medical facilities and medicines free?
Just because you had one bad encounter doesn't mean the whole of the NHS is messed up. I dont know how long ago you had your fracture but currently the waiting time is 4 hours in an emergency depeartment.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

^^ That is a max. In my hole we wait one and a half. Dentists are within the week.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist …

:cb::rolleyes:

it is not about food it is about mouth flora and acidity…some people get cavities, some lucky ones don’t :halo:

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

Ugly Sem,

There are two systems running simultaneously in Netherlands, One is called Zoekenfonds (dont know the exact spellings), anyone who is making below 36000 Euroes doesn't pay anything at all & is treated through that fund & not treated much different from those who pay 2000 per year.

I had to pay 2000 per year because my income exceeded the figure above.

Unlike NHS, where only prescription is free, in NL everything is free no matter if u earn under 36000 euroes per year & claim Zokenfonds or pay 2000 per year for particulier.

Wait time in Netherlands is around 2 hours the most depending where do u live in some areas its around 15 minutes.

As I mentioned in my post above I had to wait 16 hours for that fracture and even in the end doctor only said nothing happened it just swollen. Two years ago when I had to walk into Hillingdon hospital for a quick blood test I had to wait for good 5 hours and I was thinking what the heck I am used to wait for 5 to 10 minutes in Holland for the same thing - this is a joke.

The problem is, people in UK are living in England for decades & some of you are the thrid generation. Ironically you haven't seen the systems in the other countries and think NHS is best. Its not even easy for you to move out of UK, moving out of the country is not easy. My problem is that I am constantly moving, though I know one day I'll settle down somewhere but I unconciously I am still choosing where to settle. That is not UK for sure.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

why do desis insist on using the term "britishers"

Najim, so what 'really' happened in England to make you so anti UK ;)

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist …

having experienced NHS, yeah it sux…i felt english docs were witches sometimes…not real docs:konfused:…so i am planning to move back to england only cause i learnt how to deal myself with my health

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

Fraudia,

I am not anti UK, but life is getting extremely expensive there, useless TAXES crappy services and quality of life is going down the drain. On top of it lives of Asians are under probe there so why live somewhere where I know things wont get better but decline rapidly. Instead its better to choose an environment where decline is not that rapid or at least things can stay better for fore-see-able future.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

please where is that place? (i'm also looking for a place to settle)

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

"Britishers"?

Anyway, as far as i know, kids get free dental care up to the age of 16 here (it may have changed)...I think, for the ones who drink a lot (alcohol), that cud be a factor in having bad teeth...we all know how much ppl drink here so perhaps that leads to rotting teeth.

As far as waiting goes, i think that is almost everywhere. In America if u have no insurance, ur basically screwed. And once, my parents waited more than 12 hours in a Texas hospital's casualty. Germany has a really good medical system (or used to anway)...i believe overall, European countries r a lot better in this regard, than America.

Re: Why Britishers do not go to a Dentist ...

They dont go to dentists, because they love their yellow pegs
