This is an old article from 1993 but one I think is worth a read in light of recent global events, the causes for conversion are still here but increased 10 fold IMO:

Many of Britains “New Muslims” are from middle-class backgrounds. They include Matthew Wilkinson, a former head boy of Eton who went on to Cambridge, and a son an d daughter of Lord Justice Scott, the judge heading the arms-to-Iraq enquiry.
Chota: *The bit highlighted addresses questions and aspurtions cast by many non-Mulsim members on this board that suggest that Islam is only a religion for the poor and that the increase in numbers of Muslims is due only to high birth rates.
I envisage more and more people turning to Islam as the faith is put under the media spotlight.
