Re: Why being ‘conservative’ is considered negative?
Not all but the worst of them are like religious fundamentalists like the American version of Zaid Hamid/Taliban or worst type of Shiv Sena. The ordinary one is conservative about family values, dont believe in divorce, don’t believe in pre-marital sex, abortion and children having sex education and they don’t accept gays. They are religious Christians and they oppose the promiscuity of hollywood and US movies. The total opposite image of Americans that we desis have from US tv shows. I admire some things about them like the fact they are proud of their conservative family values despite most of the country giving them flak. I made some redneck american friends online. They were the reasonable ones and though i didnt agree with them they came across as humble, honest, hardworking men and women of the land. Kind of like simple minded villagers. If you fit in and accept them they like it. Some vary in the beliefs above. Some can be racists some are not. If it’s a guy he might have some misogynistic values.
However, some are open minded about immigrants and new culture but not all. They are conservative so they don’t want society to change too much. People who live in texas like PCG and Khattichic prob know about them.
If they are just ordinary southern rednecks this is how they would be like.
If you watch the TV show the 7th heaven. Those types of shows appeal to them. Religious in a Christian way, with limited physical interaction between males and females. In places like Utah polygamous marriages occur and are seen as norm although illegal.
Re: Why being 'conservative' is considered negative?
The thing is one person's conservative may be another's fundamentalist. The reason conservatives, usually social rather than the financial kind, have a negative image and are seen as backward is because they are less likely to be inclusive of other cultures, more likely to stick to their own culture, maybe they will be racist and impose their views on others. An american conservative may be unaccepting of ethnic minorities, they may not support hijab, niqab, prayer rooms for Muslims in universities, or people learning about other religions like Islam, Sikhism or Hinduism in the classroom. A Pakistani conservative may not accept western ideas, western clothes in colleges/universities, western based clubs, people doing things like yoga which may be seen as against culture/religion or free mixing of people in colleges. An Indian conservative may not like people accepting eating meat or alcohol in some states (Gujurat), or dressing of western clothes, or accepting western celebrations like Valentine's day. The western clothes part only works on imposing that on women. Guys are usually ok to wear pants, shirts or whatever.
Extremes of conservative and liberal are not good. But here are reasons why conservatives may be seen negatively.
If you accept one type of conservative can you accept other conservatives?
Some conservative cultures have elements that have been around for many years but are not in the benefits of society. Conservatives will want to continue it for tradition, or because they are afraid change will ruin society. They may want others to follow this as well. If the conservative without wanting to impose their conservative lifestyle or viewpoint on others then they are less likely to be seen as negative or backward.
Re: Why being 'conservative' is considered negative?
It's probably because extremist conservatives will want everyone to follow their own beliefs. They will push it down the throats of others like Taliban for example. Liberal extremists have to get to a very bad stage to do that. Maybe like communists? But no one believes in that anymore. Liberals who are extreme might tend to say you go your way and i'll go mine just dont impose everyone goes your way to get to the destination.

I don't think that liberal extremists follow ' you go your way and I go my way'. They are adamant to prove their way right and others wrong. Same as you are saying for conservatives. If that was not the case, conservative extremism was not being highlighted with that much intensity. Whats the point of pin-pointing an ideology, if you believe 'you go your way and I go my way'.

I think no one likes others imposing their culture and ideologies on them. So to an extent conservatism exist in all culture and probably its natural to great extent. But again these very people most of the times miss the point that as they don't like others impose their values on them, others also don't like them to impose their values.
Re: Why being ‘conservative’ is considered negative?
True extreme liberals can impose as well. Although most from what i know are fine with people having conservative values but not trying to impose on others. They respect them for their views as long as they don’t make everyone follow them because they think if 2-5% don’t follow it society will be immoral. I think today conservative extremism is more an issue than the liberal one. In lot of countries liberals hardly have that power and conservatives to reach out to masses. The burkha ban in France is from a conservative government and the taliban like to break down anything they dont like such as girl’s schools, the buddha statues in Afghanistan. In India the shiv sena (more regional group rather than religious based on marathi ruler shivaji) don’t like people celebrating western days like valentine’s day or girls wearing tight clothes. Conservatives don’t like change yeh unki problem hai. and liberals dont like going back yeh unki problem hai. If you take best of past and best of other cultures and future you go forward as a society. Liberals on either spectrum fight for minorities of society. Which one you support can depend on where you live. You might be conservative in Pakistan but support liberal ideas overseas depending on your beliefs.
I mean conservative extremists are even after people’s moustaches these days. Yeh to hadd hogayi. hum logon ki mardangi ka itna direct insult.
No liberal extremist ever attacked anyone’s moustache. They have stylish mooches. BBC News - Pakistani man defies extremist demands over his moustache
Re: Why being 'conservative' is considered negative?
why open mindedness is something going against the norms? It seems arrogant and rude that I perceive things rightly and all the established traditions (established over centuries by different minds) is totally absurd.
Re: Why being 'conservative' is considered negative?
Another question. Why extremism is more hilighted when dealing with conservatives? why not its highlighted in same manner while dealing with liberals?
Simply because of some people don't know the literal meaning of the term 'extremist'. They only how to associate this word with a certain type of image, people and ideology. You'd see that kind of attitude pretty frequently on this board even from the self proclaim 'open minded' people.
To answer your original question, its only the inferior complex of South Asians that's made the term conservative a negative thing. Otherwise in Western cultures, conservatism or being conservative is perfectly normal and accepted phenomena, in some cases, almost an appreciated one too.
