Why are youth ashamed?

Why are you ashamed of your culture and traditions? Is it peer pressure?

There are so many of these examples, the person will not be comfortable wearing shalwar kameez on the streets! Why?? When the black guy, gay person, gino, britney spears have their styles, why not you?!

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

Well, it's an old problem with Pakistani Youth, but I don't very much agree with it, Now I have seen many young people taking interest in our cultural heritage and old buildings that reflect our traditions and culture. New generation is now growing with enough confidence and most of them are not ashamed of their independent views.

For example; I come across such people who are very fond of listening Sufi music like Abida Perveen and other stuff like that. And about shalwar kameez then in my opinion people still like to wear shalwar kameez according to the rends that have been changed over times. It's not bad to walk with the new trends, people do wear shalwar kameez but in different styles and I donm't think there's something wrong in it.

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

Brother i would summarize everything in two words

"infriority complex"

westerners ruled us for a long time and we look upto em as masters and think wateva they are doing is right and start following em blindly.

i myself have alot of complexes, we just gota improve ourselves

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

they wanna be like the gorai!!!

My daughter came out " I dont wanna wear them clothes" when I was gonna put a salwar kameez on her when she was around 2 and I was like "WHAAT"since then I make sure she wheres apnai kaprai every sat or sun, their not practical to wear at nursery, so she does wear english clothes.
I shall continue to encourage to wear them when she is older, I dont think their is anything wrong with wearin english, but respectedly and by not forgetten your roots!!

Well I for one think shalwar-qamees relaxes me too much (more like making me lazy for some reason)... while wearing shirt and trowsers I am always alert somehow. I'd much rather wear kurta pajama which is pretty much a turkik dress code and is similar to a shirt and trowser anyhow.

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

its a matter of "fitting in"
and it's not just pakistani youth.....all communities face this problem.
wanting to be like everyone else around them is a need that children face from an early age.
then they go through a phase of wanting to be individuals where they reject and deny belonging to any one group at all.
and then, hopefully if we have done a good job as parents, they develop confidence in their unique-ness....pride in their roots.

"When in Rome , do as the Romans do"

Styles of the folks you mentioned become a matter of amazement, while that of an ordinary person become matter of **amusment.

** Identification as a stanger is the only thing that would stop common people to excersise their culture in public, and do not assume that we are ashamed of our culture.

i wear shalwar kameez out in public sometime and the only people who act weird towards me then are desis.

how is that for ironic.

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

I don't think they are ashamed "ashamed", from what I have seen in college is that on special events kids love showcasing their culture but on normal days they just don't want to be talk of the town and they just want to fit in the society they are actually part of.

All kids go through various phases of accepting, rejecting, and accepting; adults sorrunding them should try to understrand different phases their kids are in and make sure they don't take any step that would make kids hate their culture.

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

You'v obvioulsy never been to Bradford luv!

I have never felt ashamed wearing shalwar kameez in public, however, sometimes its just not practical.

Re: Why are youth ashamed?

Ive never felt ashamed of my shalwar kameez and Im an ABCD. If Ive got to make a quick trip to Jewel for milk n Im wearing shalwar kameez, then it is what it is. Ive pumped gas in a sharara...all I gotta say to anyone that stares is:

Dont hate! Appreciate!

Re: Why are youth ashamed?
