Why are we attached with something....??

Why are you attached to your house, to your wife, to your girl, to your ideas, to your meditations, to your system, why? What would happen if you were not attached? Attachment gives a certain occupation to the mind - right? You constantly think about it. And this constant occupation is one of the factors which the brain and the mind says, “Yes I must be occupied with something” - please follow all this. With my god, with my sex, with my drink, with my god knows what - I must be occupied - with the kitchen or with the king, or with some social order, or commune, or whatever it is. And out of this demand for occupation there is attachment, you hold on to something. Now why is the mind occupied? Why must it be occupied? And what would happen if it was not occupied? Would it go astray? Would it disintegrate? Would it feel utterly naked, empty and therefore the fear of that emptiness, therefore occupation? And therefore the importance of the furniture, the book, the idea, and all the rest of it. So out of the empty feeling and loneliness of not being totally whole, the mind is attached. You follow? And can the mind live, be vital, energetic, full of depth, without attachment? Of course it can. *

Peace rajey

The topic is an interesting one so thank you for that. Why are our minds occupied with what we do?

First of all why don't we ask the other 'sister' question? ... who can prove that their mind is not occupied? Any answers? In order to answer why our minds are occupied we need to show that it is possible to put the mind on vacation. It has nothing to do with fear or emptiness but rather of the mechanism of occupation.

Attachment is not occupation of the mind this is the assumption that you have made in the given piece. Attachment in the metaphysical sense is from the heart it is a desire to attain or maintain. Occupation of the mind is something else entirely.

You ask 'why' our minds are occupied? In order to answer the question we would inevitably need to make our minds occupied to introspect an answer, or else the question would be pointless. By occupying our minds to answer the question it defeats the point that you trying to make which is that we should not occupy our minds. You say that our minds are occupied out of fear of being empty then without establishing this hypothesis by example or demonstration you then base another conclusion off it. Then you conclude that the mind can be all things without attachment, which technically should be "a soul can be energetic, full of depth without attachment" yes ... but the mind if it is awake and conscious then it can not be unoccupied. There is a huge gap between this metaphysical connection that you are trying to insinuate exists.

Let me conclude by saying that it is possible and regularly so that our minds become unoccupied it happens all the time ... when we sleep. Although the brains are active the minds need to become unoccupied to facilitate sleep. Possibly trance states will also render minds unoccupied, but I prefer to think of trance states as minds occupied with inner experiences where as normal states whilst awake is the mind occupied with outer experiences and sorting those experiences in a manner that translates to comprehension, analysis, evaluation, etc.

I believe 'feeling' to be the common denomenator between the outer and inner experiences, since they both can induce the same feeling.

It is a warning! Don't confuse mindlessness as equal to detachment, or detachment equal to mindlessness. Use your mind to regulate your detatchment and attachment. Attachment itself is not harmful rather to allow attachment to exist without regulation by the mind is very harmful. Likewise mindless detachment is a position outside this balance. Neither detachment nor attachment should be allowed to exist without the mind to put checks and balances in place.
