The reason they are disliked so much is their attitude regarding the muslims in general and specifically muslims of Indian subcontinent. They charge them of commiting shirk and blindly following madhab of imam Abu Hanifa (RA). Taqleed of madhabs has been accepted throughout islamic history by ijma of scholars. To charge it with innovation or kufr is to charge all the scholars of past and majority of muslims with heresy and innovation. Keep in mind that majority of muslims today follow one of the four imams such as Abu Hanifa (RA), Shafi’e (RA), Malik (RA), Ahmad (RA) in matters of fiqh. Muslims in countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Bosnia, Algeria, Morroco and others follow these imams. In their zeal wahabis sometimes don’t refrain from attacking the scholarship of said imams specially imam Abu Hanifa in hadith and fiqh as well. They believe that they are the only ones who understand the concept of tauheed while hanafis are ignorant in this respect. The topic of taqleed and wahabism is discussed among the scholars belonging to both sides many times. Up until now it has achieved nothing but dissension among muslims. I personally believe that taqleed has always been accepted by great scholars in the past and is not something that came up recently. Besides that they charge muslims from subcontinent of indulging in innovations, to which I agree with them to a certain extent. Its not their intention but their attitude and approach marked by hostility which is disliked by many. I’ll give you an example. Whenever you will meet a wahabi, he will ask you where is Allah? What is this supposed to mean? The most basic fact is that Allah is One, the Self-Sufficient, does not begets nor is He begotten, and there is nobody equal to Him. This is enough to ascertain somebody’s belief but the wahabis make it a philosophical discussion and then pronounce judgements of kufr on common people.

Think about it guys. When you die and at the day of attonment will you be asked what shia's, sunni's, wahabis do or rather what you did in your life ?
I think you'll have way too much time on your hands for these useless contemplations which promotes hate and self righteousness and nothing more.

azam, since u bring up muslims of subcontinent.... wouldnt u agree that muslims of subcontinent are indeed the lousiest muslims. but the blame doesnt fall on one section and i.e wahabies but all the muslims equally. while Islam spread all over asia and africa and wherever muslims went.... its the muslims of subcontinent that slacked off on their responsibilities of spreading Islam.
Starting from the days of akbar and his "deen-e-elahi" muslims of subcontinent are guilty of inventing things into Islam and therefore corrupting it. Its the muslims of subcontinent that invented things like "sufi worshipping" "grave worshipping" "milaad" and other bidaats into Islam and made it a daily practice and a part of Islam. then ppl like mirza qadiani and others invented more things into it. but thanks to the GOP that this matter was fixed and all the qadianies, lahori group, mirzaies were rightly called non-muslims. soon insha'allah GOP will set its record straight on grave worshippers as well. cos its hightime we muslims of subcontinent differentiate between Islam and other religions.
if u care to think about it.... we even hurt the aalims whose graves we endup worshipping. cos their intention was to bring other muslims closer to Islam and was not to gain popularity or to gather a audience who would praise them after they died. And that holds true even for Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) whose purpose in life was to bring Islam to earth, deliver it to muslims and convince muslims to spread Islam throughout the world. It was not the intention to leave scores of people who would praise him and hold milaads and cosider it a part of islam.
this stuff of praising dead scholors and preaching on dead scholors graves exists only in subcontinent and let me explain where we picked it up from. from hindus. they see a cow, they see that it gives milk and they worship the cow, instead of worshipping the one who made the cow. they observe that snakes are fertile and they start worshipping it instead of woshipping the one who created the snake and made him fertile. same goes for all the other objects, symbols, idols they worship. beleive it or not muslims of subcontinent are guily of carrying over this analogy to Islam. And this crap exists ONLY in the muslims of subcontinent.
Today some of our brothers worship objects be it graves, dead aalims, taveez ganda etc. and it all came down from hindu philosophy of "object worshipping". so we dont worship cows and snakes but we go to a aalim and think he would perscribe u a taveez "an object" that will somehow change ur life and fix ur problem.... instead of asking from the one who listens all the time without ur need to see a sufi or aalim and his prescription of taveez an "object". so some muslims dont worship things carved out in stone but they do go do sajda on a grave "an object" asking for help.... when we can ask the one who made the stone, the person who is laying dead inside the grave. and the one who promises to listen to you all the time.
I come from a small town in punjab and got first hand experience on how much shirk is preached in the name of Islam even today. Untill I met the "Tableeghi Jamaats" in the mosque one day and alhamdulillah it changed my life. I would recommend you try learning from them someday and open up your horizons.
