Why are the laptops going cheap?

Look at this deal!

Cheap Laptop
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.66GHz
512MB DDR memory
60GB hard drive
Windows® XP Home
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive
Wireless performance via Wi-Fi (802.11g)
Model 2598US
Saw an exact same deal on an exact same configuration laptop from Toshiba at Circuit City.

Could it be because of the 64-bit processors soon to flood the market?

Don't know much about the 64-bit processor flooding the market but I know this that Centrino processor could be the cause. From what I have read about Centrino it sounds like a better performer than regular P4 processors.

well its not bad :)
its cheap cuz Intel is switching from toasting process :D I think.
Old P4 cpu s were made on 13 nm and the newer ones (prescott core) are made on 9 nm . which means they are cheaper to make.
Besides that, I also believe Intel is getting afraid of AMD, cuz several days ago I read news, that alot of big companies are thinking of AMD cpu s only for laptops :)

but I also must warn you, this is actually a desktop replacement.
It prolly wont run for a long time on batteries and heating will also be a problem. Its not a P4-M (mobile) or a centrino :)

Are laptops any cheap in pakistan? How much could i by a decent laptop with all the neccessary features (dvd/cd-rw, usb ports,lan, modem etc)?

approximate price? any guidance to pk pc websites?

I guess soemthing like 80.000 - 90.000 roepees :)
When I was there a cheap laptop was aprox 70.000 roepees

Thanks to advancement in technology :)

even the AMD 64 bit processors are not that expensive, but tis the way world goes things will have to go cheaper eventually specially the technology.

e.g. Plasmas screens are down to AU$3500 (42") where as 2 years ago the cheapest one was around AU$9000+

same goes with laptop , there are now so many no name brands in market offering much more what a branded laptops are offering :))
