Especially if the the sin only affects those involved in the act itself and not anyone else, unlike riba etc.
‘Riba is considered to be a greater sin, for Muslims, than that of eating pork or drinking alcohol. Mohammad declared the practice of Riba worse than adultery: worse than “to a man committing adultery with his own mother”’
Re: Why are 'sexual' sins considered worse than others?
^The hadith is incomplete and wrongly quoted.
Correct text is Riba has various levels, the smallest level is equal to having sex with one's mother.
Sorry, I quoted it quickly from an english source but had heard my mum mention something along those lines before as well.. If the smallest level is equal to that isn't it even worse?

That only means that riba is considered worse than sexual crimes (in some scenarios) not the other way round.
Re: Why are 'sexual' sins considered worse than others?
I think culture plays a big part in it. It's probably seen as more shameful if your son or daughter sleeps around than if they earn interest on their savings.
Re: Why are 'sexual' sins considered worse than others?
This Hadees is quoted here, and often used, in wrong context.Actual Hadees is against gheebat ( backbiting) and says (paraphrasing) that RIBA has many (72) levels, lowest of which is like doing nikah with your mother and highest is like backbiting. We should learn from this, the horrific sin we commit when we do gheebat.
Re: Why are 'sexual' sins considered worse than others?
There is inexplainable mystery and attraction around the issues related to sexuality. That is why, in my opinion, most if not all of us view crimes/sins that are sexual in nature differently from other crimes/sins.

Yes unfortunately the same standard does not appear on our film certification boards ... they pass certain dodgy scenes in sex more easily than violence ...
The problem is that sex looks appealing it is difficult to determine the harm, violence or bad language is clear even to a child that it is bad ... because it logically follows - the harm ... Sex seems like it is better because people are showing love to one another ... However the harm in sex is indulgence ... which leads to promiscuity which can lead to rape related crimes and sexual deviation and every bad thing itself is done to obtain sex ...
Think of the top few things that motivates people and sex is amongst the highest ... why buy a sports car? To pick up ladies of course .... silly question. We don't realise that nations go to war for sex - The story of the eggs before they hatch ... when the man comes to the point of describing the concubines his wife smashing the egg over his head ...
Smoking looks cool - why look cool? To increase sex appeal ... We are animals and sex is the game that makes us fall - Is it no wonder why free and open sex is considered bad - it creates immorality and encourages a state of being which is void of honour and dignity.
