why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Why are many people against taking tablets for mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia etc

I am a medical student and will be a doctor in 11 months. I have seen patients on tablets for mental health issues and have used them myself.

If used sensibly under a doctors supervision I am all for them.

what are your views?

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I don't know anybody who has but I would think ppl are hesitant to take those drugs because its easy to get addicted to them? Or they have bad side effects to it?

I would also think, many people still don't believe that mental health is just the same as physical health....that whatever mental and emotional issues they have, they have to just "get over it"

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

They have denial.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

**i think people are hesitant to use medication for mental illnesses because it has a social stigma and also that those drugs may have a side effect and last but not the least is the apprehension that they will dependant on them for ever.

these are all myths. one needs to see a psychiatrist if it's needed without any further delays.**

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

This.

People still have a hard time believe there are mental illnesses and think its all in the person's head.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Because they have a lot of side effects.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

The proper treatment for mental/psychological ailments is seeing a psychiatrist. And psychiatrists, I believe, exaggerate the disease :halo:

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Just like a mechanic exaggerates the problem in the carburetter

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I respectfully disagree.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Your lucky to be still driving a car with a carburretor I thought most cars these days have ECU's which give the orders to Injectors :p

But I honestly loved Carbs you could tune up a lot easier with a Carb than a EI engine.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I have to say, at a certain point in my life I actually did go to see a therapist/psychiatrist about some issues I felt I was having.

All he did was put me on pills. He kept prescribing pills.

I took them for a month before I shook myself out of it and decided to actually do something about my depression.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I think its because more chances of addictive dependability.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

never mind. what i spoke was from a personal experience, and they vary everywhere.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Yep.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I agree. My psychiatrist told me that I have a pretty annoying and irritating personality.

Talk about exaggeration .. pfft.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

because you could get addicted :@:

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Medicines alone never help in most psychiatric conditions, but aided with therapy and change in environment they can be very useful. A doctor prescribing medicines for depression without any therapy is not a being a professional.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

^ Yes.

Psychotherapy however is for somewhat advanced disease.

It is time consuming and simple problems can be treated with short office discussion and simple meds.

At times meds may not even be needed or very short term prescription can help.

It all depends on the symptoms.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

Because drugs treat symptoms, not the issues. We are not JUST physical beings with neurological connections and upset hormonal levels. There are triggering factors and to live life fully, one must learn to deal with those factors. Prescribing drugs for issues that one can learn to deal with better is stupid, in my opinion.

I am not as against prescribing drugs for more complex issues such as schizophrenia, bipolar etc. I named these disorders because I don't understand them properly. There maybe effective treatments for those too, I just don't know. Highly complex comorbid disorders could necessitate drugs too, but not JUST drugs.

But for things like anxiety and depression, it is mostly situational and has to do with one's ability to learn better skills and their perceptions. Much less would you find people with depression due to pure neurological/persistent hormonal issues. Also, the relapse rate with drugs is a 100% if the situational/personality factors are not taken care of/changed.

O man. I am annoyed by your thread. Here is a request, please do NOT push drugs on people who can do without them, who can learn to live better lives with skills, rather than dependency on drugs.

Re: why are people against medication for mental health/psychological issues?

I think these drugs are overused in the uk, it's like people don't want to deal with the real issue so they asked to be doped up instead. One of my cousins is married to a horrible guy, he gets drunk, takes drugs and sleeps around. She got really depressed, instead of leaving him she went on antidepressants, now she's so doped up she no longer cares what he does. Most of the women I know on those drugs take them so they can tolerate crap marriages.
