It’s cuz the FOB girls are cooler…with their looped, greasy pigtails bound with ribbons…the dupatta maroring…choti lassoing… that pinky finger grinning…and how they know so much about the world around them (jharoo, kameez ki badalti length, and making dung patties). i’m not one bit confooosed…well atleast not about my cultural background and i think the abds have the best of both worlds in us, oh but it’s just sooooo sad that there tends to be this generalization about abds based on whatever people see in hollywood and bollywood movies and thinking that’s how life is in the west for desis or just b/c they saw one like that we’re all like that.

i just ignore all the stereotypes and generalizations, as hard as you try to convince people that you aren’t that way or you are as much desi and traditional as the fobs, those people will only see it the way they want to see it even if reality is quite different and not so black and white.

Like I said before somewhere else,

FOB’s were at one time mothers of ABCD’s/whatever girls, loved by/married to their fathers.

I think one should just marry whom they feel most compatibility without placing a huge impetus on someone who is a Fob or ABCD.

This thread is absolutely pointless and full of generalizations. I have great amount of respect for girls in Pakistan and here in West. Girls in the west have to put up with lots of insanity which our "culture" has to offer. They fight hard to balance between both with their traditional and religious expectations. And for girls in Pakistan, they grew up seeing male dominated society and try to fulfill the expectation which only male dominated society ask them to do. Girls in Pakistan are slowly learning to balance though.

Funny that we don’t realize that those of us who live in the US will be raising the same ABCDs we’re making fun of today. Of course everything will change then, conveniently. :hmmm:

And I don’t know who coined this term ABCD American Born Confused Desi, because really, I’ve hardly come accross any ABCD who is confused. Our desi parents work harder than parents back home these days instilling religious and social values in them, work on educating them, etc…while back home the new generation hardly knows anything more than haggling at shopping centers or the latest Bollywood heartthrobs. No wonder they have such a hard time adjusting in the US as they feel lost without their 10 maids. Yes that’s a generalization but if I look at just the people in our community, this is what I am observing.

I don’t think there’s jealously anywhere.

PS: I’m not an ABCD

abcd girls seem to be prettier/better-groomed except when it comes to desi events and wearing desi clothes - most of them seem to get it all wrong. which is understandable.. the first time i wore my fav amreeki shirt back home in india, i was mistaken for a rickshawala by an angry waiting customer... and for a waiter at a dhaba.. on the same day.

b/c it goes right back to the stereotypes and generalizations thing too, b/c I know some people that grew up in the old country that don’t even know their own culture or religion very well so i’d say those ones that i’ve met are pretty confooosed :smiley: along with the few ABDs that are like that…ahem
