Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Trust deficit in the current regime is the biggest hurdle, in my opinion, that Pakistanis and international donor agencies are setting up their own systems for flood relief instead of donating to the Government directly.

More than £300 million in foreign aid for victims of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake has been diverted by President Asif Zardari’s government to other causes, officials have told The Daily Telegraph.

*They now fear that the alleged diversion of funds will deter donors from giving further aid after the country’s devastating floods.

According to senior officials, schools, hospitals, houses and roads planned with money given by foreign governments and international aid groups remain unbuilt almost five years after the earthquake which killed 80,000 and left four million people homeless…*

It is an embarrassment but better for the people, at least they will get the donation even if it is somewhat slow at the moment.

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Trust deficit for the nation (pakistanis perceived as terrorists), and that of the government...

thats the reason why no international donor is helping, and even pakistanis are not supporting that much...

there is donor fatigue as well...

i personally believe that we shouldnt wait for the divine foreign help, and try to rebuild this time on our own...this will not help restore the trust of pakistanis in their government but will also help in the future to respond to similae calamities...

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Donation to whom? Zardari!!! Mr. 10%... after current IZAT from the English Newspapers on his recent trips, who consider donating Pakistan Govt??? even Pakistanies are not comfortable then how come other western countries who actually know the AUQAAT of the President of Pakistan would donate???

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

^^ now he is Mr. 100%

I agree with Ali, it is time we stop relying on foreign sources and take the responsibility on our shoulders.

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Even Saudi Govt didnt gave it in money but as Food stuff and neither to Pakistani government but to UN to help Pakistan :D

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Who will help Pakistan?

When US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a public appeal for money to help the 14 million Pakistanis affected by record flooding, she received a miserly $ 12,000. compare this to the Haiti earthquake. A flash appeal saw the United Nations alone reach its $ 577 million target in a month. The UN’s ReliefWeb estimates it has gotten 18 per cent of what it wants for Pakistan…

…Pakistan is more likely a victim of three problems:

  1. Incompetent Islamabad: Government and aid agencies privately complain Pakistan has yet to properly assess the damage and indicate where help is needed…

  2. Corruption: Corruption is the single biggest impediment to relief in Pakistan today. It is a major reason for the reluctance of international donors who worry where their money will go. This is true even among Pakistanis. …

  3. Image: Pakistan’s flood crisis has been poorly served by the media-unfriendly nature of the disaster and the country’s reputation as a hub of militancy and terrorism…

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

The image of Pakistan built unashamedly over the years internationally is responsible for this. Terrorism thrives in Pakistan and evidences (Wikileaks) prove it, yet the media, the govt and people are in perfect denial mode. For such liars and enemies of humanity who will come forward to help. The most philanthropist country/ person will think twice to help.

Re: Why a slow response for flood relief from international community?

Why are Islamic countries not giving aid?

The apathy of Pakistan’s friend on the question of aid from them at this hour of need is best exemplified by ‘friends’ like most of the members of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) except for Turkey, Kuwait and UAE, whose response has been limited to a cursory condolence messages or a few airplanes with aid in kind.

Iran has yet to live up to its past contribution to Pakistan when in need, by extending a helping hand to the hapless people of the country.

Pakistan will accept India's aid only after it see's how much aid is received from other countries, then decided whether it would accept India's help.

Saudia Arabia - 100 Million dollars. Including Air bridge already in effect.
Jordan - Medical team of 25 and 21,000 vaccines.
Turkey - 5 million dollars - 35 million tonnes of food and over a few thousand tenst

And so much more. Muslim contributions still in fact out weight Western contributions.
