Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

I have kept my maiden name and don’t plan on going through the hassle of changing it everywhere legally. Sometimes people call me mrs. “My maiden last name” , which just sounds bizarre :hehe:.

What I want to ask other girls here who have kept their maiden names after marriage is that, have you faced any legal set backs because of it?

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Legal set backs? Such as?

So far I haven’t had any issues. My mother also kept her maiden name and to my knowledge, it has never caused any negative issues legally during my parents marriage. The only “issue” that might arise these days is when travelling…especially internationally…with minor children if the children have a different last name. This is easily solved by simply carrying a birth certificate with you in case someone makes an issue of the different names at the airport (I know several moms who do this).

P.S. I find it more bizarre when someone I know refers to my husband as Mr. “my maiden name”! :cb:

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Oh thanks for the heads up on the traveling issue! Lol so what do they think that you are running away with someone's child?
I don't know some people talk about set backs but I am not sure what they mean either. So no problems with joint tax returns etc right?
Lol ok now that's just really bizarre haha.

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

if you travel with kids without the their father, carry a consent letter allowing them to travel with his wife.

my bhabhi's are in 70's and 80's and they have different surnames and they never faced any problems. i know quite a few people who have different surnames and they didn't face any problems either.

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Actually yes. Kidnappings happen more than people realize. Especially when children are young enough where they can't really communicate (this isn't an issue with teenagers). But like I said....its easily solved by carrying a birth certificate and/OR as KKF mentioned....a consent letter signed by the father allowing you to travel with them alone (this should be notarized just to lessen hassle).

Next time someone mentions a "set back"....ask them to clarify. But no....0 issues with IRS. LOL.....given the fact that gay/lesbian married couples can file joint tax returns....along with people who are not legally married but considered to be in a "common law" marriage by certain states.......IRS doesn't give a hoot about the couple's names being the same. They're happy as long as they get the $$$. :)

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

I read some where that we'll be called by our mother's name. God knows better.

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Unmarried white couples with kids aren't uncommon in the west so in practical or legal terms I don't think it matters much if you have different surnames..

(On a side note tho common law marriage doesn't exist officially in the UK)

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Or do what I did…marry someone who has the same last name as your maiden name (though totally unrelated lol)

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

I don't believe its right or wrong to change your surname as no where in Islam it says you have to change your surname once you get married. It's just a cultural thing and nothing else!!!

Re: Whose sir name should the girl keep?

Hi i have a very important argument for you....

my friend changed her wife surname after marriage.

so lateron when he applied for i guess visa or immigration , it got rejected because her degrees and passport etc were in old name

so he had to get his degrees re issued in new name

get passport re newed

give ad in news paper

get NIC re renewed

think about the time and money wastage

you could rightly argue that your legal name remaining the same would be beneficial in future :)
