although this might seem like a really basic question that i can just look up in a book or online, depending on who i ask a pakistani or an indian and which source, the answer changes.
how can something so critical to a war differ so drastically in the history books in either country?
who won world war 1 and 2 doesn’t differ depending on whether we’re asking a german or a brit does it?
you have to define when you say who "win" what does the "wining" means?
If it comes to casualties .. .. then i believe, that indian casualties were higher but when pakistan was re-treating after the western pressure, Pakistan faced HEAVY loss in terms of casualities
If it comes to response of army, then Indians 2 armies (air force, army) was active however from paksitan side there was "no such" involved of PAF.
I just wrote few facts.
Here you will find few "pro pakistani" and few "anti-pakistani". So, i don't think that you will get a decent reply here as well. I can even predict few peope who will bash pakistan here .. :) .. ..
The best approach is to read as much as you can but read from neutral source.
Pakistani irregulars backed by Pakistani Army infiltrated into Indian controlled territory and occupied key heights .
Indian Army dislodged them .
Who won ?
BTW another case of Pakistani State Actors in the guise of Non State Actors.
Incidentally this war was imposed on us soon after both the countries had gone nuclear. So who acted irresponsibly ?
And few months before Indian PM and gone to Lahore to discuss "peace".
After the conflict, Pakistani PM said that he had "no idea" about the plans for the infiltration and that "he first learned about the situation when he received an urgent phone call from Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his counterpart in India" . :)

LoL, most Pakistanis believe that India lost all the wars. Indeed most Pakistanis still believe the popular myth that 1 Pakistani = 10 Hindus that has its roots in Martial Race Theory.

That was because one side was completely destroyed in both the world wars. Not the case with Indo-pak wars thankfully. Enough of us are always alive to tell their own versions.
No one gained anything from Kargil conflict. Pakistan didnt go all out for this limited war. India was able to defend and re occupy the posts. Militarily I think India only able to send the Pakistani guys back when international pressure mounted on Pakistan to retreat. Both sides suffered heavy losses. All the military gains by Pakistan were lost to India when it came to negotiation table of world politics.
Manisha.. you claim to come here to make friends with the Pakistanis.. but when you start a thread like this.. what are your intentions? do you not realize this can easily come down to the same old india vs pak bickering? is that counter productive to your usual "yay we are friends"attitude?
I will let a former Air Chief Marshall of Pakistan Air Force answer your questions :
@sharabee
We must destroy many myths and lies created against India in the minds of many moderate Pakistanis. It is not possible to do this without addressing such controversial and provocative issues. Peace based on the foundation of ignoring perceived historical grievances is weak and flimsy. If the extremists abuse us, we must grin and bear it

i think this answer makes the most sense and seems to show that there was no winners in this war, both lost in terms of heavy casualties and it just lead back to status quo.
don't see how it would lead to fight, hope it doesn't, since the thread question has been answered, hope the mods close the thread.
Agreed..Many moderate sensible Pakistanis already realize who won and who lost.. some won’t admit it due to ego issues.. but that’s not what I was saying… I’m just asking Manisha why she feels the need to start this cuz it is quite counter productive to her usual attitude..

ummmm first off you know nothing about me and i have never spoken to you about "my intentions" whatever you meant by that. i really don't care what you think
the thread topic i didn't realize would lead to a fight, i wanted to know what the respective history books say of either country and i honestly did not know that the war ended in such a way that it didn't match how world war 1 and 2 ended. i know you might have been raised in india but i was not so many things are a bit strange to me and especially in regard to various events that happened in south asia and how they are retold in the history books in either india or pakistan
thanks Shak_kills for giving a pretty neutral answer

don't get so touchy.. in general anyone can start this topic.. i was just saying its counter productive to your usual attitude.. based on what i have noticed only of course.
if you actually want to know more about an event i suggest you go through wikipedia at least...
This is the third time that I have heard this refrain from you.
