Who was Akasha?

“The Nebi Akasha mosque, apparently built under the Ayyubid dynasty in the 12th century with additions made under the Mamluk dyanothernasty in the 13th century. It is believed that the mosque was founded on the burial site of combatants in Saladin’s army, though an ancient tradition designates the site as the place where Akasha, a friend of the Prophet Muhammad, was buried.”

So just read this…who was Akasha?

Re: Who was Akasha?

Where is this mosque located? I think Mufti Taqi usmani's travelogue 'Jahan Numa' may contain some details on this.

Re: Who was Akasha?

This masjid is in Jerusalem..

Re: Who was Akasha?

I tried to find it in Mufti Taqi Usmani’s travelogue ‘Jahan Deeda’, but I found he could not visit Palestine due to visa problems and he could only go upto Jordan.

Then I tried to find name of the sahabi Ukasha (I knew the correct pronunciation because one of my colleague named his son Ukasha) in Karen Armstrong’s ‘A history of Jerusalem’, which describes the event of conquest of Palestine during Hazrta Umar (RA) rule in 638 AD and also mentioned some of the prominent Sahaba (RA) who settled in Jerusalem, but the names do not include Ukasha.

Finally, I found this link related to some old places in Jerusalem and on page 63 9 in fotenote 58) it is mentioned about Ukasha mosque as under:

Named after Ukasha Ibn Muhsin, one of the companions of the prophet Muhammad, who settled in Jerusalem following the Moslem conquest (about AD 638), on whose tomb it was built.

As per Wikipedia:

At the order of Muhammad, a platoon of 30 Muslim fighters led by ‘Ukasha bin Al-Mihsan was despatched to a place called Al-Ghamir inhabited by Bani Asad in the year six Hijri. The enemy immediately fled leaving behind them 200 camels which were taken to Madinah.[SUP][[SUP][/SUP]](“Expedition of Ukasha bin Al-Mihsan - Wikipedia”)
