My habit has been to make a ghost image of the drive after installing any OS and all the applications I can't do without and then some. So if things do fail u don't go back to square one and rather to square 25 :).
Tofi - does a ghost image work after installing a different OS? It's been a while since I played with imaging/cloning utilities, but my understanding was that an image is only valid if you want the exact same OS configuration on a HDD that is exactly the same as the image source.

LC, if you have 50 applications that you work with and don't want to go through the hassle of re-installing and re-registering then new OS isn't worth it. Moreover, if Vista is doing okay then why bother? If its working why fix it?
On the other hand, what are your laptop/pc specs?
I had free upgrade to Vista ultimate when I bought my laptop like 4 years ago and did not upgrade as its my work laptop. Only thing that forced me to upgrade was the sheer slowness overtime with Windows XP Pro and I made the jump (after thinking about it since august) to Windows 7 and extremely happy. I started fresh, I reinstalled some of the applications but most that I had were rarely used so no harm done.
If your PC/HD crashes tomorrow, the logical choice would be Win 7 Ultimate (32/64bit).

Has anyone tried or have windows 7? Is it significantly better than vista? I heard it still had problems but I want to hear from real experience. My laptop is loaded with vista and I have been told by computer stores I cannot put any other operating system on it. Bummer! My computer takes five minutes to start up then when it gets to the vista screen it takes another five to six minutes making it a grand total of 10-11 mins before I can do anything..oh well, at least my desktop has xp..
P.s- do you think windows will come out with something new again in a few years? And what about those lame commercials with people boasting they created windows 7 because they complained to windows about something and windows changed that thing. Hello, 1 milllion plus people must have complained!

My laptop is also loaded with window vista never had problems likes your. Sounds like the antivirus slowed down you laptop or if there are many programs starts at starup then it also cause system slow...i just heared complaint from you... Every window have its own problem... Thats how the company make profit...
