To buy groceries or supplies? Why why why why why waste my time when the line behind you is about a mile long..Thankfully the majority of the customers used debit/credit.. i prefer to deal with cash, its easier, but id’ still take credit./debit/voucher over checks..
Checks are like cassette players, completely obsolete
Here in the UAE cheques are still quite common. Not for grocery and stuff like that of course, because that is mostly paid with credit or debit card. But for large purchases it's still common practice to use cheques here.
I for example used to a cheque to pay for my car, which I bought after moving here 3 months ago.
Umer is right in saying that cheques are used only for big amounts. I would like to add that the minimum amount which you can fill on a check is about US$30 otherwise you get charged for the service.
Grr what i hate even more is when they tell you, they wanna pay $40 with the check and partially with the cash.. and then if it takes too long,t they have the nerve to say “oh im ni a rush, can u hurry”
Its busy busy time right now, we deal wit 400 customers an hour (supposedlY ) so it doenst make sense to use a check/cheque…
I know Sara, and it's usually women who still use checks. When at the grocery store, I am so tempted, when someone in line uses a check, to yell out "JOIN THE 21st CENTURY!!!". But then I remember that there are people in the world who still live paycheck to paycheck and NEED to use the check to buy groceries because it takes a few days for checks to clear vs. electronic transactions. Some people have to juggle their bank account because they don't have enough money at the time they are paying with a check. So in the future, instead of getting angry at someone for using a check, maybe you should just think "Gee, thank GOD that I have SO much in my life", I assure you, you will feel much more patient.
I hate it too and as aahmed said, it's mostly women who do this. Most of them don't even write the date, sign, and fill out the "for" par while their groceries are being scanned. They will wait until the last minute and then fill out everything. I mean come on, you can fill out everything else, once you get the total, fill out the amount!
Aahmed I don't get your statement where you say "it takes a few days for checks to clear vs. electronic transactions. Some people have to juggle their bank account because they don't have enough money at the time they are paying with a check". A check can clear in 2-3 days whereas your get the credit card bill in a month (depending on your card's billing cycle). So wouldn't it make more sense to use a credit card?
Shikra, debit cards will debit instantly and if you don’t have enough funds in your bank, they will get declined, whereas checks will be accepted even if you don’t have enough funds in the bank today, as long as there are enough funds when the check actually is presented to the customer’s bank..
With a check, the process is somewhat like this:
Customer writes check
Store takes check and deposits in their bank either today or tomorrow
Store’s bank then sends the check to the clearing house
The clearinghouse then takes the check to the customer’s bank
Finally, the cusomer’s account is debited the amount
This usually takes almost a week, buying the customer enough time to get some funds in the bank.
