Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Taufeeq Umar is the obvious choice for me

Khurram Manzoor deserves an extended run after his twin fifties in the 2nd (lost) test against Zimbabwe

Other names I can think of:

Nasir Jamshed
Umar Amin
Fawad Alam
? Azhar Ali
? Asad Shafiq
.
.
.
Don Imran Farhat :smack:

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Pak selectors have been advised by some ex-players to include as many left handed batsmen as possible in the Test squad.... suggestion prompted by weird belief that Steyn (allegedly) is less effective against left-handers!!

Now that's called think tank. I would rather they pick the best available in-form players instead of packing the squad with mediocre lefties

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Jamshed should be there as well as Taufeeq
Please no Khurram Manzoor He doesnt have the technique to stand against Steyn and Morkel

And I think even hafeez will play

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

I think there is no reprieve for us from Hafeez so I guess the Opening pair would be HAFEEZ AND TAUFEEQ, but if ideally speaking with the current lot we have I would play the following lineup

Khurram Manzoor
Taufeeq Omar
Azhar Ali
Younis Khan
Misbah Ul Haq
Asad Shafiq / Umar Akmal / Umar Amin
Mohd. Hafeez / Abdul Rehman (Second Spinner & Tail ender)
Adnan Akmal
Junaid Khan
Saeed Ajmal
Mohd. Irfan

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

The best opening pair, Hafeez and Farhat they will give Pakistan a flying start by flying back to the pavilion within the first 2 overs.

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Younus and misbah should open ..... With azhar Ali coming one down ... Asad shafiq second down and hafeez should get some rest ...

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Nasir Jamshed should open. Taufeeq umar as second choice

For me the main man is Umar Amin. Very compact and correct.

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Umar Amin can be brought in place of Hafeez.

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Taufeeq and Nasir jamshed / khurram manzoor

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

It looks like a list of probables has been published without the names of Mohammad Irfan, Harris Sohail, Nasir Jamshed and Taufeeq Umar, but surprisingly Thank God for no Imran Farhat in this list. So despite the beizzati from Zimbabwe, we didnt drop anyone from that squad. We are a proud Nation mashaAllah. Allah in jahil think tank ko tarraqqi nahi de ga. Bunch of corrupted losers.

Misbah retained as skipper for South Africa Tests - DAWN.COM

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

These are probables, but squads will be announced later so we can still hope

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

This is too much if they are going to continue with Hafeez in the squad as opener. There is no other backup option named except Shan Masood and he aint getting a spot in the playing 11. No Nasir, No Taufeeq. Didnt Fawad Alam score a 168 as opener in UAE? Anyone but Hafeez man.

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

**Misbah’s vote for Taufiq in vain as blundering Hafeez gets nod
**
It seemed that the embattled Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq had little say during the session at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore on Thursday before the list of probables and Pakistan ‘A’ squad to face South Africa was made public.
Information gathered by Dawn indicated that the 39-year-old Misbah virtually failed to get his way in when the think tank of Pakistan cricket assembled for several hours to finalise 28 names for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa.
Apart from selectors Azhar Khan, Saleem Jaffer and Farrukh Zaman, the meeting was also attended by head coach Dav Whatmore and team manager Moin Khan plus of course, Misbah. While most of the selections were, more or less, spot on, the exclusion of Taufiq Umar was totally inexplicable considering his impressive stats against South Africa (730 runs at 60.83 in six Tests.
According to media reports the day before (Wednesday), Misbah was pressing for the inclusion of experienced opening batsman — who returned home without playing in the three-match Test series in South Africa earlier in the year because of a leg injury — and had publicly backed his case for selection. But the next day, Taufiq’s name was glaringly found missing from the list of probables circulated through a press release of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Reliable sources said that being under pressure in the wake of the shock defeat to Zimbabwe in Harare almost a fortnight ago, Misbah found himself cornered when the deliberations started.
“Misbah was left with no choice but to agree with the selectors. Taufiq’s case was discussed but the selectors pleaded that it is the right moment to move forward and start planning for the [2015] World Cup from now onwards. It is no point keep on picking players who had been tried over and over again,” the sources remarked. “The selectors are keen on building a decent pool [of players] for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.”
But when pointed out as to why the horribly out-of-form Mohammad Hafeez had being named among the lot for the South Africa series, the sources claimed that the think tank kept faith with the Pakistan Twenty20 skipper because of his better form in limited-overs cricket.
“This may sound a bit weird that a player who has been struggling to make runs in Test matches this year has been selected in the list probables. But this sort of policy is nothing new in our system,” the sources explained. “But if Taufiq Umar has been overlooked for being not in the best of form then how Hafeez gets picked? How come the form in other formats [ODI and Twenty20] can justify his inclusion for Test matches, the selectors do name in the final squad?
“Maybe Hafeez is a luckier cricketer than Taufiq otherwise there is no justification in even having him in the list of probables particularly after gauging his poor run of scores [102 in 10 innings] in Tests this year.”
With batting, generally Pakistan’s weak link in recent years especially at the top of the order, the decision to neglect Taufiq for the second straight tour running could backfire with disastrous consequences.
“It won’t come as a surprise if Hafeez is found opening the innings against South Africa in Abu Dhabi with Khurram Manzoor because Pakistan think tank won’t risk either Shan Masood or Ahmed Shehzad against a bowling line-up containing Dale Steyn,” the sources predicted.
“There could be a debate on Taufiq’s form and admittedly it wasn’t that good last season. But still he was selected for the South Africa tour earlier in the year on the basis of his past track record against them. If the selectors believe in continuity then they should have included an experienced batsman like Taufiq now as well.
“The defeat against Zimbabwe was embarrassing but if we lose badly against South Africa it would be a crushing blow for Pakistan who need to garner as much as experience in the squad to at least compete on equal footing,” the sources concluded.
Meanwhile, the selectors have been extremely busy during the past few days, travelling around the country to conduct trials of the regional outfits for the forthcoming domestic season.

useless tank!

How is the selection of a squad for a Test series related to planning for 2015 WC?

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

There is a reason I say this team as Team Misbah and I wont be surprised if Misbah leads us in WC 2015 too lulz

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

I think the ideal combination would be Professor Hafeez and Mudassar Nazar.

Re: Who should open the batting against SA in tests?

Dear Dumb Selectors: Please look below and keep in mind 2015 WC. Most of this 28 probable have been tried and tested as failures so how can you think long term and certainly a few of them like Azhar Ali, Faisal Iqbal, Adnan Akmal, Aizaz Cheema aint ODI material. What does test and WC 2015 have to do with this squad? Idiots!!! Probables for camp: Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Adnan Akmal (wk), Abdur Rehman, Shan Masood, Khurram Manzoor, Ahmed Shehzad , Azhar Ali, Umar Amin (capt), Faisal Iqbal, Asad Shafiq, Ehsan Adil, Ahmed Jamal, Akber-ur-Rehman, Usman Qadir, Yasir Shah, Sohaib Maqsood, Aizaz Cheema, Imran Khan, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Junaid Khan, Rahat Ali, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Zulfiqar Babar, Yasir Shah.
