In Asian culture its mostly the parents who bear all university expenses for their kids .. this includes any international degree programmes as well ..
Do you think its fair that parents continue to bear the expenses or should students going abroad for education take up a major share of the responsibility and work and study … and delay their semester if needed in order to be able to pay for the fees?
I think if parents can afford it then they should support their children but not to the extent where children start stupidly spending just because mummy and daddy are covering all costs. Saying that the child should also work part time to contribute towards their costs.
I am not sure what the 'norm' is ,but when my husband moved to USA to study, his father paid his expenses for the first semester only. After that he worked in the evenings and nights and paid all expenses (living, education). It took him a few extra years to complete his degree but he eventually did.
If I can afford it and my child needs help,I think I will go ahead and pay all expenses.I will not discourage them from working on the side, but it will be important for me to make sure that they do not get side tracked or in any way delay the completion of their education.

Depends eh!. Well if parents can afford to pay for their child's education then sure why not. But i believe in making student work part time to support themselves too. That way they can build their resume and learned to take on world when they are about to graduate or something like that.
I insisted to my parents that i would be paying my own way. They got me to that stage. From that point on, i felt if i never stood on my own two feet then i never would
