Who should be our captain?

Who can’t be our captain:

  1. Yousuf is gutless, spineless, indecisive, coward, panicky etc etc when it comes to captaincy and we all know it. He is simply not a “Captain” material. The sooner PCB understands this, the better it will be for our cricket.

  2. Younis has catagorically said that he won’t ever want to captain the side again

  3. Kamran Akmal: Although he is most experienced player, when it comes to test cricket, I think, he needs to concentrate on wicket keeping and taking some catches before he can be considered to captain the side

  4. Shoaib Malik: He is demoralizing factor in the side and is going through a rough patch - how can he captain the side?

  5. Misbah: He needs to be kicked out from the team, let alone made a captain

  6. Salman Butt: He needs to concentrate on batting and become consistant before he can be given an option to captain the side.

So, who should be our captain in Test Matches? What other options do we have from the following remaining bunch?

  1. Umar Akmal
  2. Asif
  3. Aamir
  4. Umar Gul
  5. Faisal Iqbal
  6. Sami
  7. Danish

No one.

I personally believe PCB needs to talk to Shahid Afridi and pursuade him to come back into test cricket and should be made a captain. He is experienced, aggressive, resilient, energetic, and most of all, has cricketing mind.

What do you guys think?

Re: Who should be our captain?

Yousuf :)

Re: Who should be our captain?

Screw the captain. First fix the PCB structure. The chairman should not be appointed by politicians. This should be a qualified position.

Put some educated, cricket minded, honest and ethical people in there (hard to find those in a corrupt and pathetic country like Pakistan).

You know what, just forgetaboutit. Come to the realization that Pakistan is a third class country in every department, be it sports, politics, research, science, ethics.

Lower your expectations.

We have lived in a facade for too long now. We are not the nation we are told in our textbooks.

Afridi is not a test captain material...Younis is a cuckoo and we have had enough of his dramas. Kamran Akmal does not deserve a place in the test team alone given his pathetic keeping, let alone awarding him the captaincy.

Yousef is the only choice as test captain till 2011 - Salman Butt should be made his vice captain and hopefully he will become a better player and be able to take the captaincy after a year.

For the ODIS and T20s - I would stick with Afridi as the Captain for both formats...

Re: Who should be our captain?

Afridi should be the captain in ODI n T20 n in Test Younis

Re: Who should be our captain?

Younus!!

The guy who goes into a resigining fit every time some one criticises him. And he may be better than Yousuf but he too used to make many rubbish decisions specially in handling the bowlers.

Just like Afridi is not a captain material Butt is not a test player, to make him vice captain will be another low for Pak cricket.

Re: Who should be our captain?

Muhammad Yousaf must get few more chances after all its Australia but later on Afridi or Danish Kaneria should be captain for both one day and test. We need Captain like Hansie Cronje, captain must be aggressive, we lost so many win win games bcz of our so called batsmen. In batsmen ka kuch sochna paray ga serios ho kar bcz bohat ho gia ab further nahin.

Re: Who should be our captain?

There is not a better alternative than Yousuf right now! he sux but thats all we got! just gotta suck it up!

Sadly, no one from the given choices. I'm a big Younis Khan fan but if there going to be noaction taken against rebellions and mutiny in the team, then I agree with him... forget about captaincy, play as a batsman.

Funny how no one ever thought about Kaneria. I actually wont mind him being a captain. The guy is a spinner but thinks like a fast bowler... is a lousy fielder but an aggressive player and a hard worker. Oh but who wants a bloody hindu to be our captain right?

Fungus, how've you been. I see someone else as bitter as I am about Pakistan :) The match is just an icing.... the cake has been baking for a while now.

I was pissed off in the first 20 mins of the 4th day and stopped cheering for Pakistan. They simply didnt deserve to win. Hasn't hurt one bit since then, cos I was expecting and hoping for it. If they had won, it would have meant this fcken joke of a team and leadership actually WON against Australia... which they sooo dont deserve!

won't make any difference IMHO

Our current test batting is simply not good enough. Until and unless our batters develop the necessary test skills - patience, discipline, application and temperament - no matter how well we bowl, we won't be able to compete with major test nations

It is almost like we don't know how to win test matches any more

Hey bud, good to see you post.

Yeah man, I have been way past that stage where I would get pissed and my heart would ache for Pakistan. I have become a global citizen without national prejudices. I now appreciate quality and professionalism more than mediocrity and stupidity.

I just can't get myself to support the goons at PCB who run the show. If it was any other team they would have a captain in place and another being groomed to take over. The sad fact is we don't have even a half ass captain. I don't even know who the fk is our vice captain.

It's just a fk'ed up country. The ****ty part is we can not blame America or the CIA for all this either. We have no conspiracy theories to deflect the blame.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Re: Who should be our captain?

Younis Khan has shown similar issues in the past that we are accusing Yousuf of, its only once in a while that Younis showed some spark otherwise he is no different.

Only if Afridi can makeup his mind then he can be given captaincy otherwise just stick with Yousuf.

OR be a SAffie and make Aamer the captain!.... but our 'seniority culture' will kill him.

There is no one else who can be the VC and take over the captaincy after the world cup. Butt may become a better player, who knows. There is no other opener in Pakistan who is better than Butt at the moment. Granted, thats not saying a lot but thats the situation currently in Pakistan when it comes to batters...ie few and far between.

I also think Yousef should continue to captain. I know he can be defensive but I also see him as the best batsman in the team who is the only one who can hold his place in the team on merit alone...

Others like Younis,Afridi etc play when they want too and run when they dont...Yousef is at least sticking with his job.

Heres an excerpt to a cricinfo article....I feel bad for Yousef....he doesent deserve the lyncing...that should be reserved for people like Misbah and Kamran Akmal.

Mohammad Yousuf came to the press conference alone. Usually he has been accompanied by the team manager but something about such defeats is a very solitary endeavour. He answered his questions with as much dignity as you can muster in these situations. All the while his eyes looked like nothing, not thinking, not smiling, not working where they usually are the most interesting thing after his beard to look at. After the questions had been asked, a real inquisition began.

Four journalists from Pakistan took Yousuf aside as had been the practice after most days to get not only the inside dope, but some coherence. Most Pakistan players are more comfortable and articulate in their own language and their answers in Urdu have much more than in English. Usually his eyes have a working mischief to them but he looked as shattered as a naturally unexpressive man can.

He sat slumped on a bench to the side of the press conference area, two journalists sitting either side of him and two standing up in front of him; it felt fully and distastefully like an interrogation.

Was this the worst we have ever played, no loosener, good short ball first up. "I am not saying we played well," Yousuf fended it nicely to square leg. "We played very poorly, very poorly. First of all my shot, I will say it was horrible. But what else can I say. We played really badly, they played well. You can write whatever you want on how badly we played."

People will write it too. Some more venting was required. Things had to be taken off the chest and scapegoats had to be found. There were quite a few. Harsh questions were asked, but I always thought such situations would be more heated, tenser. Words would be exchanged, some shouting and pointing of fingers. But questions came wrapped in sweet, inoffensive tones, even soothing. We could have been at a funeral where nobody died.

'Why do we do it?' asked one, a simple and impossible question. "It wasn't a difficult chase," Yousuf began. "We should've done it easily. We can't take pressure. Many of the side are young. If some players have been playing for 8-10 years…" Another interrupted him, to point out that the young had been playing well. 'It's the seniors who aren't performing. Misbah, Kamran and you are three seniors.' Solid cut.

"Yah…mine was a really poor shot," Yousuf said again.

'And what about Danish? Compare him to Hauritz - Danish gave 150 runs, Hauritz only 50.'

"Danish gave a huge effort," Yousuf continued his defense. "He bowled 50 overs. Danish had to take wickets. We gave Hauritz wickets."

Someone interrupted the lynching to ask about the moment Pakistan really lost this Test, in the field in the morning, when Pakistan went at Australia like a goldfish encircling a shark. Yousuf didn't think much of that period, just that Pakistan had to be defensive against Michael Hussey. "We had to stay defensive with Hussey. Siddle ended up playing well, scoring 40 runs. We didn't realize he could." Not recognizing the flaw of his plans revealed more than the answer itself.

Most venom and time was reserved for the wicketkeeper. Kamran Akmal is a sweet man. That doesn't help in holding onto catches or scoring runs and he hasn't done either here. Questioners then became solution-providers, an uncomfortable crossing of a sacred line.

'Misbah also…he is old now, reflexes are slow. Body language is also poor,' started one journalist.

"You are right, no doubt about that," replied Yousuf, though not really and leaving it, teasingly, at that.

One told Yousuf that by his thinking nobody will ever get replaced in the side. Before he could answer another asked why Shahid Afridi and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan can't play in this side, given how long the tail is. For the first time, Yousuf revved up. "Afridi says sometimes he wants to play, sometimes he doesn't want to play. What can a guy do? You tell me, what can I do?"

It was only left to wrap up and look ahead to pointlessness. Here was the making of a summer and it was now undone. Not that he had been agitated but some of Yousuf's calm filtered back into him. "We have lost but cricket hasn't stopped, or come to an end. When it does end, we will stop. We will try to play well in the next Test and try to win it. We have seen we can win if we bat well."

A couple of the journalists rubbed it in a little. 'We haven't smiled for two hours. Only now once you are here we smiled.'

"What can I say?" Yousuf asked, before saying it. "If I fall now, everyone else will fall too. What I am feeling inside right now, what can I tell you? What can I do? If I fall those guys inside will fall. They need to think themselves too and accept. I made a mistake, I accept it. I will try not to do it again. There is no doubt if I had stuck around for a while, put on another 15-30 runs we could've been okay. But I took a chance and I got to the ball but the ball came too low at the bottom. Okay wrong shot but he held on to it. Since yesterday things were working against us…

"The first innings, that was it. If we had taken a 300 lead…" he trailed off as Ricky Ponting walked past, looking not enough like the man who had been pardoned just as the noose was going around his head.

Re: Who should be our captain?

We need aggressive Captain, we need Captain like Hansie Cronje, Australia ko Australia ke andar ja kar haratay thay South Africans under the Captaincy of Hansie Cronje. Aisa time bhi aya tha Australians pit jatay hotay thay k South Africa se jeet jayen koi match, lagatar 4/5 one day matches Australia harty rahi hai South Africa se. Hansie Cronje ne Aussies ko bandth ke rakha hua tha.

Re: Who should be our captain?

Stop killing you brain cells, and start thinking like PCB (well for that you dont need any brain let alone massacre of cells). what i have conjectured so far, PCB is not about genuineness or clarity cricket. after every miserable loss, PCB put a new show of false hope for us. so let cheer “da Actor a.k.a shoaib actor” for Captain. :champ:

Re: Who should be our captain?

Danish Kaneria

Squeeky Kamran Akmal should be the captain..............

Re: Who should be our captain?

I love this quote from Yousuf: "Danish had to take wickets. We gave Hauritz wickets." And I would add Danish could've had more had Akmal kept wicket like a decent keeper.

I think the best option for captain is Yousuf but I also think Umar Akmal should be made VC and groom a young cricketer for captain. Like Sehwag said about next Indian captain. We need to group up and not think that only the most senior can be made captain.

Re: Who should be our captain?

My vote is for Kaneria. I have a feeling he'd be a pretty good captain. His fitness leaves a lot to be desired though.
